Hugo Obwegeser
Hugo Obwegeser (21 October 1920 – 2 September 2017) was an Austrian Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon who is known as the father of the modern orthognathic surgery. In his publication of 1970, he was the first surgeon to describe the simultaneous procedure which involved surgeries of both Maxilla and Mandible involving Le Fort I and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy technique. Career In 1945, Obwegeser attended the Rockitansky Institute of Pathological Anatomy at University of Vienna after he consulted his uncle who was a physician. He received 1 year of general surgery training, 2 years of pathology training. Then he went to University of Graz, Graz University to train in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery under Richard Trauner. He trained there for 6 years and performed many surgeries related to war injuries. Condylar Hyperplasia
Condylar hyperplasia (mandibular hyperplasia) is over-enlargement of the mandible bone in the skull. It was first described by Robert Adams in 1836 who related it to the overdevelopment of mandible. In humans, mandibular bone has two condyles which are known as growth centers of the mandible. When growth at the condyle exceeds its normal time span, it is referred to as condylar hyperplasia. The most common form of condylar hyperplasia is ''unilateral condylar hyperplasia'' where one condyle overgrows the other condyle leading to facial asymmetry. Hugo Obwegeser et al. classified condylar hyperplasia into two categories: ''hemimandibular hyperplasia'' and ''hemimandibular elongation''. It is estimated that about 30% of people with facial asymmetry express condylar hyperplasia. The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is the British medical association for oral and maxillofacial (mouth, jaws and face) surgeons - dual qualified surgeons, qualified in both medicine and dentistry. History Oral and maxillofacial surgery developed as a surgical development in dentistry to treat servicemen injured in World War 2. The British Association of Oral Surgeons was formed in February 1962. In 1985 the organisation changed to its present name. Orthognathic surgery (), also known as corrective jaw surgery or simply jaw surgery, is surgery designed to correct conditions of the jaw and lower face related to structure, growth, airway issues including sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, malocclusion problems primarily arising from skeletal disharmonies, other orthodontic dental bite problems that cannot be easily treated with braces, as well as the broad range of facial imbalances, disharmonies, asymmetries and malproportions where correction can be considered to improve facial aesthetics and self esteem. Walter Reed Army Medical Center
The Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)known as Walter Reed General Hospital (WRGH) until 1951was the U.S. Army's flagship medical center from 1909 to 2011. Located on in the District of Columbia, it served more than 150,000 active and retired personnel from all branches of the military.
