Hughie Callan
Philip Hughes Callan (26 December 1881 – 5 February 1917) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was killed in action serving with the First AIF in France. Family The son of Philip Hughes Callan (1840–1893), and Rose Margaret Callan, née Miller, Philip Hughes Callan was born at Ararat, Victoria, on 26 December 1881. He married Eleanor Lilian "Lala" Williams on 17 June 1911. Education He grew up in Melbourne, and attended Christian Brothers College, Victoria Parade, East Melbourne. Since the inception of the Victorian Football League in 1897, many of its players have served in the armed services, including the Anglo–Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War (in which Melbourne's Geoff Collins served as a fighter pilot), and the Vietnam War (in which Essendon's Keith Gent, Lindsay McGie, and Ian Payne, and Geelong's Wayne Closter all served). A number of the VFL players who served also lost their lives on active service; they were either killed in action, or died as a consequence of the wounds, injuries, and/or illnesses they had suffered in their active service. Peter Charles Burns (5 January 1866 – 11 October 1952) was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football Association (VFA) and Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of John Burns (1829-1897), and Martha Burns (1833-1914), née Harrison, Peter Charles Burns was born at Steiglitz, Victoria on 5 January 1866. One of his brothers, Allen Burns, played for South Melbourne in the VFL. Peter Burns married Elizabeth Corbett (1867-1951) in South Melbourne on 18 April 1889. 1905 VFL Season
The 1905 VFL season was the ninth season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 6 May until 30 September, and comprised a 17-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Fitzroy Football Club for the fourth time and second time consecutively, after it defeated by 13 points in the 1905 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1905, the VFL competition consisted of eight teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match.
