Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre (known in Kingdom of Great Britain, Great Britain as the Incident on King Street) was a confrontation in Boston on March 5, 1770, in which a group of nine British soldiers shot five people out of a crowd of three or four hundred who were harassing them verbally and throwing various projectiles. The event was heavily publicized as "a massacre" by leading Patriot (American Revolution), Patriots such as Paul Revere and Samuel Adams. British troops had been stationed in the Province of Massachusetts Bay since 1768 in order to support crown-appointed officials and to enforce unpopular Parliamentary legislation. Amid tense relations between the civilians and the soldiers, a mob formed around a British sentry and verbally abused him. He was eventually supported by seven additional soldiers, led by Captain Thomas Preston, who were hit by clubs, stones, and snowballs. Hugh Lawson White
Hugh Lawson White (October 30, 1773April 10, 1840) was a prominent American politician during the first third of the 19th century. After filling in several posts particularly in Tennessee's judiciary and state legislature since 1801, thereunder as a Tennessee Supreme Court justice, he was chosen to succeed former presidential candidate Andrew Jackson in the United States Senate in 1825. He became a member of the new Democratic Party, supporting Jackson's policies and his future presidential administration. Hugh White (December 25, 1798 in Whitestown, Oneida County, New York – October 6, 1870 in Waterford, Saratoga County, New York) was an American businessman and politician from New York. Life He was the grandson of Hugh White, the founder and namesake of Whitestown. White attended the common schools. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1823. Then he studied law but did not practice. Instead, he entered business at Chittenango in 1825, and afterwards at Rondout. He was active in the building of the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad. He moved to Cohoes in 1830. He was greatly interested in the development of water power from the Mohawk River. He established the Rosendale Cement Works. White was elected as a Whig to the 29th, 30th and 31st United States Congresses, holding office from March 4, 1845, to March 3, 1851. Air Vice-Marshal Hugh Granville White, (1 March 1898 – 23 September 1983) was a Royal Air Force air officer. He was a First World War flying ace credited with seven aerial victories, and later went on to serve throughout the Second World War, finally retiring in 1955. Early life and background White was born in Maidstone, Kent, and originally chose a naval career, attending the naval training school from 1911, before studying at Eastbourne College from 1914. First World War In September 1915, White became an Officer Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and on 7 April 1916 was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment).
