Hugh Tucker (drag Racer)
Hugh Tucker is an American gasser drag racer. Tucker was the first driver to win three National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) national championships in a gas supercharged class. Racing career Driving an Oldsmobile-powered 1928 Chevrolet, he won NHRA's A/SR (gas) national title at the NHRA Nationals, held at Indianapolis Raceway Park, in 1962. His winning pass was 11.14 seconds at . At the Winternationals, he claimed the Little Eliminator win. The next year, he added a supercharger to the Oldsmobile engine. At the NHRA Nationals in Indianapolis, he again won the AA/SR national title. His winning pass there was 11.33 seconds at . He also claimed Junior Eliminator at the Winternationals, over Bob Culbert. Gasser (car)
A gasser is a type of hot rod car originally used for drag racing. This style of custom car build originated in United States in the late 1950s and continued until the early 1970s. In the days before Pro Stock, the A/Gas cars were the fastest stock-appearing racers around. History Gassers are based on closed body production models from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors, and Lexan windows (sometimes color tinted). National Hot Rod Association
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is a drag racing governing body, which sets rules in drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. With over 40,000 drivers in its rosters, the NHRA claims to be the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world. The association was founded by Wally Parks in 1951 in California to provide a governing body to organize and promote the sport of drag racing. NHRA's first Nationals was held in 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas. The 1962 NHRA Winternationals were a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing event, held at Auto Club Raceway, Pomona, California on 18 February. History The 1962 Winternationals were historic for the appearance there of NHRA's first woman class champion. Under pressure from Peggy Hart (wife of track owner "Pappy" Hart) and Mickey Thompson, as well as fellow racers Shirley Shahan and Roberta Leighton, Carol Cox was the first woman allowed to race at an NHRA national event. Influenced in part by Thompson's preference for Pontiacs, Cox drove a 1961 Ventura with a 389cui/368HP V8, which was driven (not trailered) to Pomona. Supercharging
In an internal combustion engine, a supercharger compresses the intake gas, forcing more air into the engine in order to produce more power for a given displacement. The current categorisation is that a supercharger is a form of forced induction that is mechanically powered (usually by a belt from the engine's crankshaft), as opposed to a turbocharger, which is powered by the kinetic energy of the exhaust gasses. However, up until the mid-20th century, a turbocharger was called a "turbosupercharger" and was considered a type of supercharger. The first supercharged engine was built in 1878, with usage in aircraft engines beginning in the 1910s and usage in car engines beginning in the 1920s. In piston engines used by aircraft, supercharging was often used to compensate for the lower air density at high altitudes. The 1963 NHRA Winternationals (commonly known as the Winternats) were a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing event held at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California on February 17, 1963.
