1963 NHRA Winternationals
The 1963 NHRA Winternationals (commonly known as the Winternats) were a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing event held at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California on February 17, 1963. Events Jack Williams' new front engine dragster, slingshot streamliner Scuderia (dragster), ''Scuderia'' made her debut at this year's Winternats, in Top Gas. She also won the "Best Appearing" award. Results Top Fuel In the Top Fuel Front engine dragster, Dragster (TF/D) final round, Don Garlits (not yet nicknamed "Big Daddy") defeated Art Malone. Altered Top Gas ''Scuderia'' made her debut, recording a best pass of 8.83 seconds at with Ron Lowe at the wheel, before mechanical trouble sidelined her. National Hot Rod Association
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is a drag racing governing body, which sets rules in drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. With over 40,000 drivers in its rosters, the NHRA claims to be the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world. The association was founded by Wally Parks in 1951 in California to provide a governing body to organize and promote the sport of drag racing. NHRA's first Nationals was held in 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas. The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series, the national event series which comprises 24 races each year, is the premier series in drag racing that brings together the best drag racers from across North America and the world. The NHRA U.S. Nationals are now held at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Indiana and are officially called the U.S. Nationals. Plymouth
Plymouth () is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately south-west of Exeter and south-west of London. Hugh Tucker is an American gasser drag racer. Tucker was the first driver to win three National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) national championships in a gas supercharged class. Racing career Driving an Oldsmobile-powered 1928 Chevrolet, he won NHRA's A/SR (gas) national title at the NHRA Nationals, held at Indianapolis Raceway Park, in 1962. His winning pass was 11.14 seconds at . At the Winternationals, he claimed the Little Eliminator win. The next year, he added a supercharger to the Oldsmobile engine.
