Hugh Tinkham
George Hugh Tinkham (born April 8, 1946) is a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral districts of Yarmouth County, and Argyle in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1974 to 1984. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Career Born in 1946 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Tinkham entered provincial politics in the 1974 election, winning the dual-member Yarmouth County riding with fellow Liberal Fraser Mooney. He was re-elected along with Mooney in the 1978 election. In the 1981 election, Tinkham was re-elected in the new Argyle riding. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Yarmouth is a town in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. A port town, industries include fishing, and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Bar Harbor, Maine, run by Bay Ferries. History Originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq, the region was known as "Keespongwitk" meaning "Lands End" due to its position at the tip of the Nova Scotia peninsula. European settlement The region was visited in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain, who named it "Cap-Fourchu", meaning "forked or cloven cape." The first Europeans to make a settlement on these shores were the French Acadians. They set up a small fishing settlement known as "Tebouque" in the mid 1600s and by 1750 the population was 50 people. Yarmouth (provincial Electoral District)
Yarmouth is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It consists of the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and the town of Yarmouth. From 1867 to 1981, the district included all of Yarmouth County and for most of that time elected two members. Argyle (electoral District)
Argyle is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1981 and 2013 and since 2021. It elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It was created in 1981 when the district of Yarmouth was split into two separate districts. The district comprises most of the Municipality of the District of Argyle, an Acadian area occupying the eastern half of Yarmouth County. The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Argyle-Barrington. Neil J. LeBlanc (born August 8, 1956) is a former politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. Early life and education He was born in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia to Gladys (Bourque) and Alfred LeBlanc. He graduated from Saint Mary’s University and then for the chartered accounting firm of Peat, Marwick and Mitchell (now KPMG). Political career He entered politics in 1984, when he was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Progressive Conservative for the riding of Argyle. LeBlanc after his second election victory in 1988, was named Solicitor General, becoming one of Nova Scotia’s youngest Cabinet Ministers. In the 1990s, LeBlanc also served as Minister responsible for the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and Minister of Government Services. Nova Scotia Liberal Party
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. Fraser Mooney
Joseph Fraser Mooney (February 24, 1927 – January 5, 2006) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Yarmouth in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1970 to 1984. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Early life and education Born in 1927 at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Mooney was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University. Career A pharmacist by career, Mooney owned and operated City Drug Store in downtown Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for over 50 years. Politics Mooney served on Yarmouth town council from 1957 to 1965. He attempted to enter provincial politics in the 1967 election, but was defeated.
