Hugh Shield
Hugh Shield (12 October 1831 – 24 November 1903) was an English academic, barrister and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1885. Shield was the son of John Shield of Stotes Hall, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne and his wife Catherine Barnett, daughter of R Barnett of Westmeath. He was educated at the Grange School, Bishopswearmouth and King Edward's School, Birmingham. He was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1850, but migrated to Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1857 he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for legal studies and became a Fellow of the college and Senior Bursar. He was admitted at Gray's Inn in 1854 and was called to the bar on 26 January 1860. He went on the North-Eastern Circuit and became a Bencher of his Inn in 1880 and a Queen's Counsel in 1881. Sir Robert Uniacke-Penrose-Fitzgerald, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Uniacke-Penrose-Fitzgerald, 1st Baronet of Lisquinlan and Corkbeg (10 July 1839 – 10 July 1919), was a British Conservative politician. Early life Fitzgerald was the son of Robert Uniacke Penrose (1800 – 11 June 1857) of Corkbeg House, County Cork. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. His sister was the writer Geraldine Penrose Fitzgerald. He rowed at Cambridge and won the University Pairs with J. P. Ingham in 1860. He rowed in the Cambridge boat in the Boat Race in 1861 and 1862 when Oxford won in both years. After university he travelled in India and Tibet from 1863 to 1867. Political career Fitzgerald was elected to the House of Commons for Cambridge in the 1885 general election, a seat he held until the 1906 election. In 1896 he adopted the name Uniacke-Penrose-Fitzgerald and was created a baronet, of Lisquinlan in the Parish of Ightermurrough and of Corkbeg Island in the Parish of Corkbeg both in the County of Cork. Alfred Marten
Sir Alfred George Marten, QC (8 November 1829 – 22 June 1910, in St Leonards-on-Sea) was an English politician and barrister. He was Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Cambridge (UK Parliament constituency), Cambridge, between 1874 and 1880, as a member of the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party. In 1896, he was appointed a County Court Judge. Life Alfred George Marten was born in 1829 into a non-conformist family, the third son of Robert Giles Marten of Plaistow, Newham, Plaistow, Essex. His father's and grandfather's business was in shipbroking and insurance in the city of London. However, both his father and grandfather died in 1839. Patrick Boyle Smollett (1804 – 11 February 1895) was a British Conservative Party politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dunbartonshire from 1859 to 1868, and for Cambridge from 1874 to 1880. Life He was born at Cameron House, Bonhill in Dunbartonshire on 4 February 1804. He was the son of Admiral John Rouett Smollett (1767–1842) and Elizabeth Boyle, daughter of Patrick Boyle of Shewalton. His father married in 1800 and had two sons ( Alexander and Patrick Boyle) and four daughters. The eldest daughter Elizabeth (his sister) married Charles Villiers Stuart, younger brother of Lord Stuart of Decies. He was a member of the British East India Company (EIC) in Madras (now Chennai), India. The 1885 United Kingdom general election was held from 24 November to 18 December 1885.
