Lord Hugh Seymour
Vice-Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour (29 April 1759 – 11 September 1801) was a senior British Royal Navy officer of the late 18th century who was the fifth son of Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford, and became known for being both a prominent society figure and a highly competent naval officer. He served during the American Revolutionary and French Revolutionary Wars and later in his career performed a period of shore duty on the Admiralty board. Seymour maintained a reputation as a courageous and innovative officer: he was awarded a commemorative medal for his actions at the battle of the Glorious First of June and is credited with introducing epaulettes to Royal Navy uniforms as a method of indicating rank to non-English speaking allies. In his youth he formed close personal friendships with fellow officer John Willett Payne and George, Prince of Wales, through association with whom he gained a reputation as a rake. Hugh Henry John Seymour
Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Henry John Seymour (25 September 1790 – 2 December 1821) was a British Army officer and a politician. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom for County Antrim from 1818 until his death. Family Seymour was the second son of Vice-Admiral Hon. Lord Hugh Seymour Conway (1759–1801) of Hambledon in Hampshire, a younger son of the 1st Marquess of Hertford. His mother Lady Anna Horatia Waldegrave, was the daughter and co-heir of the 2nd Earl Waldegrave, Colonel Sir Horace Beauchamp Seymour was his younger brother. In 1818, he married Lady Charlotte Georgiana Cholmondeley, daughter of George Cholmondeley, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley. Captain Hugh de Grey Seymour, 6th Marquess of Hertford (22 October 1843 – 23 March 1912), styled Earl of Yarmouth from 1870 to 1884, was a British soldier, courtier and Conservative politician. He notably served as Comptroller of the Household between 1879 and 1880. Background A member of the Seymour family headed by the Duke of Somerset, Seymour was born in Dublin, Ireland, the eldest son of Francis Seymour, 5th Marquess of Hertford, by his wife Lady Emily Murray, daughter of David Murray, 3rd Earl of Mansfield. He was the grandson of Sir George Seymour and great-grandson of Lord Hugh Seymour and the nephew of George Seymour and Lady Laura Seymour. He became known by the courtesy title Earl of Yarmouth when his father succeeded to the marquessate of Hertford in 1870.
