Hugh Thompson Reid
Hugh Thompson Reid (1811–1874) was a lawyer, president of the Des Moines Valley Railroad and Union general during the American Civil War. Early life Reid was born in Indiana on October 18, 1811, to James and Ann Thompson Reid. He attended Miami University and Indiana University, becoming a lawyer. In 1839 he moved to Iowa to continue his law practice. During the 1840s he purchased large tracts of land becoming the most extensive land owner in Iowa at the time. He also became the president of the Des Moines Valley Railroad. Civil War On February 22, 1862, Reid was appointed colonel of the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment for service in the Union Army during the Civil War. Colonel Reid and the 15th Iowa first saw combat at the Battle of Shiloh. Sir Hugh Gilzean Reid (11 August 1836 – 5 November 1911) was a Scottish journalist and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1886. Reid was the son of the Hugh Reid and his wife Christian Gilzean who was descended from a long line of Highland crofters. He was primarily self-educated and later studied for the non-conformist ministry, and passed examinations in classics and theology. Reid was editor of the ''Edinburgh Weekly News''. In the early 1860s, he founded the Middlesbrough ''Daily Gazette'', the first halfpenny evening newspaper in the United Kingdom. In the 1885 general election, Reid was elected as Member of Parliament for the English constituency of Aston Manor as a Liberal. His wife, Anne Gilzean Reid, was a founder member and president of the Women's Liberal Association. Hugh Reed and the Velvet Underpants are a cult Glasgow based band who have supported Debbie Harry, Simple Minds, the Fall and John Otway. Biography The band was founded by Hugh O'Hagan, now commonly known as Hugh Reed, c. 1990 from an amalgam of members of the Harlequin Cabbage Bugs, Halcyon Days, the Rhythm Kittens and the Trouser Coughs, including at different times Lawson Campbell, Stewart MacDonald and Lindsey Watt. The first gig HR&TVU played was at Annie Miller's in Glasgow in 1989, supported by The Harlequin Cabbage Bugs followed by The State Bar where they were supported by The Rhythm Kittens. On both occasions, members of the support bands also took part in Hugh Reed and the Velvet Underpants' set. For the Annie Miller's gig, Hugh Reed used a bass borrowed from Lindsey Watt of Halcyon Days after breaking the strings of his own bass during the sound check.
