Hugh McKernan
Hugh McKernan (c. 1858 – 13 March 1929) was an Australian businessman, newspaper proprietor, and politician who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1894 to 1896. McKernan was born in Ireland, and at a young age became a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. His job was to infiltrate Irish nationalism, nationalist gatherings and report on any speeches given. McKernan left Ireland for Australia in 1882, initially living in New South Wales. He came to Western Australia in 1889, attracted by the economic prospects of the Shire of Yilgarn, Yilgarn gold rush, and set up in Perth as an auctioneer and agent for interstate and overseas companies. William Loton
Sir William Thorley Loton (11 June 1838 – 22 October 1924), was an Australian politician. East Perth was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1962. Based in inner urban Perth, the district was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. The district's member from 1894 to 1904 was Walter James, who served as Premier of Western Australia from 1902 to 1904. Elections were held in the Australian state of Western Australia in late 1908 to elect 50 members to the state's Legislative Assembly. The main polling day was 11 September, although five remote electorates went to the polls at later dates. The governing Ministerialists (led by the premier, Newton Moore) lost five seats, but retained a majority government. The Labour Party, led by Thomas Bath, gained eight seats for a total of 22, equalling their record set at the 1904 election. For the first time, no independents were elected. Electoral District Of Swan
Swan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1950 and again from 1962 to 1983. The district was located in the Swan Valley, to the east of Perth. The district was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. It was abolished ahead of the 1950 election, at which point incumbent member Gerald Wild of the Liberal Party became the member for the new seat of Dale. Revived for the 1962 election, it was won by John Brady of the Labor Party, hitherto the member for Guildford-Midland.
