Hugh Bell (educator)
Hugh Bell (1780 – 16 May 1860) was a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. He had portraits painted of himself and his wife by Halifax-based artist William Valentine. Nova Scotia House Of Assembly
The Nova Scotia House of Assembly (french: Assemblée législative de la Nouvelle-Écosse; gd, Taigh Seanaidh Alba Nuadh), or Legislative Assembly, is the deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Nova Scotia of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The assembly is the oldest in Canada, having first sat in 1758, and in 1848 was the site of the first responsible government in the British Empire. Bills passed by the House of Assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in the name of the Monarchy in Nova Scotia, King. William Valentine (painter)
William Valentine was a portrait painter and daguerreotypist in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Life Born in 1798 in Whitehaven, England, he migrated to Halifax in 1818. In 1822 he married Susannah Smith there, with whom he had two daughters. He married again in 1830 to Sarah Sellon. He died on December 26 in 1849 and was buried at Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax. Career From 1819 he worked as a portrait painter, teacher, and painter of signs and architectural ornaments. He filled a void left by portrait painter Robert Field who had practiced in Halifax from 1808 to 1816. Valentine studied painting in England in 1836, after which his work visibly improved. In 1839 he travelled to Paris where he learned the Daguerreotype process, an early form of photography, of which he was a pioneer in Canada as early as 1842. Nova Scotia Hospital
The Nova Scotia Hospital, known locally as The NS or Mount Hope, is a psychiatric hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Operated by the Nova Scotia Health Authority, it is the province's largest and oldest mental health facility. Co-founded by the Hon. Hugh Bell and Dorothea Dix, it opened in 1856 as the Mount Hope Asylum for the Insane and today it is a fully accredited teaching facility affiliated with Dalhousie University. Royal Acadian School
The Royal Acadian School was a school developed for marginalized people in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The school was established by British officer and reformer Walter Bromley on 13 January 1814. He promoted the objectives of the British and Foreign School Society in Nova Scotia, under the sponsorship of Prince Edward. The first patron was Sir John Coape Sherbrooke. Prior to the existence of public schools, the school offered schooling for middle-income students as well as low-income women, black students and immigrants. The school also welcomed Protestants and Catholics. The school was controversial, however, some of its biggest supporters were Thomas McCulloch, Samuel George William Archibald, John Young, Bishop of Nova Scotia Robert Stanser, Chief Justice Brenton Halliburton and John Starr.
