Hugh Archer (politician)
Hugh Archer (August 21, 1796 – January 23, 1858) was a politician in Florida. Archer settled in Leon County in the Florida Territory in the 1830s. Prior to Florida statehood, he represented Leon County in the Florida Legislative Council beginning in 1840 and was Chief Clerk of the House from 1842 to 1845. Upon statehood, he was the first Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in 1845 but resigned later that year. From August 26, 1845, to January 2, 1847, and July 24, 1847, to December 28, 1847, he was Florida Comptroller. In 1850, he was again Speaker of the House. David Levy Yulee
David Levy Yulee (born David Levy; June 12, 1810 – October 10, 1886) was an American politician and attorney. Born on the island of St. Thomas, then under British control, he was of Sephardic Jewish ancestry: His father was a Sephardi from Morocco, and his mother, also of Sephardi descent, was born in Sint Eustatius and raised in St. Thomas. The family moved to Florida when he was a child, and he grew up there on their extensive lands. He later served as Florida's territorial delegate to Congress. Yulee was the first person of Jewish ancestry to be elected and serve as a United States senator, serving 1845–1851 and again 1855–1861. He founded the Florida Railroad Company and served as president of several other companies, earning the nickname of "Father of Florida Railroads." In 2000 he was recognized as a "Great Floridian" by the state. Thomas Brown (Florida Politician)
Thomas Brown (October 24, 1785 – August 24, 1867) was an American politician who served as Florida's second Governor from 1849 to 1853. He is buried at the Old City Cemetery in Tallahassee. Early life Thomas Brown was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, United States, home to George Washington, James Monroe, and others. Brown served in the War of 1812, and subsequently became chief clerk of the post office at Richmond. While in that position, he invented the post office letter box. In 1828, Brown moved with his family to the Florida Territory. Politics Brown, a Whig, became auditor of the Florida Territory in 1834, president of the legislative council in 1838, a member of the constitutional convention in 1839, and a member of the first Florida House of Representatives under statehood in 1845. Florida Comptroller
The Florida Comptroller was the state comptroller of Florida from 1845 to 2003 (when the position was merged with the position of Florida State Treasurer/Insurance Commissioner/Fire Marshal to create the post of Chief Financial Officer of Florida following amendments to the State Constitution). The Comptroller was a member of the Florida Cabinet and was elected by the Florida Legislature until 1865, when it became an elected office. The Comptroller was Florida's chief fiscal officer. The post was created in the 1838 Constitution and the first Comptroller took office in 1845 and assumed the duties of the Auditor of Public Accounts of Florida Territory.
