Berkeley County, South Carolina
Berkeley County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 229,861. Its county seat is Moncks Corner. After two previous incarnations of Berkeley County, the current county was created in 1882. Berkeley County is included in the Charleston-North Charleston, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Berkeley County was established in 1682. It was named after John and William Berkeley, co-owners of the Province of Carolina. It became part of the Charleston District in 1769. It did not exist as a District during most of the 19th century and generally was part of the Low Country culture. In 1882, after Democrats regained control of the state legislature following the Reconstruction era, they established the current incarnation of Berkeley County, with its seat at Mount Pleasant. Cainhoy Historic District
Cainhoy Historic District is a national historic district located near Huger, Berkeley County, South Carolina. It encompasses nine contributing buildings, which range in date from the mid-18th century through the early-20th century. They represent the development of the village from a ferry landing to a small but thriving river port. It was the site of America's first porcelain factory, established by John Bartlam in 1765. Each building is a vernacular specimen from its respective period, including the Federal style. Cainhoy's significance lies in its role as an early transportation link between inland Berkeley County and Charleston and in its fine collection of early buildings. In 1876, Cainhoy was the site of a political rally for Wade Hampton (1818-1902) which degenerated into a brawl between blacks and whites. Middleburg Plantation
Middleburg Plantation is a historic colonial-era plantation on the Cooper River near Huger, South Carolina. The plantation house, built in 1697 by the French Huguenot Benjamin Simons, is probably the oldest standing wood-frame building in South Carolina, and is consequently an architecturally important example of period construction. Pompion (pronounced "punkin") Hill Chapel is small "back parish" church near Huger, South Carolina. Built in 1763, it is a virtually unaltered example of a brick Georgian parish church, retaining interior and exterior finishes. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Description and history The Pompion Hill Chapel is located in a rural area, overlooking the Cooper River a few miles southwest of the hamlet of Huger. It is a rectangular brick building, with a clipped-gable roof, measuring . The brick is laid in Flemish bond, and the roof is original slate. Quinby Plantation House-Halidon Hill Plantation is a historic plantation house located near Huger, Berkeley County, South Carolina. The house was built about 1800, and is a -story, five bay, frame Federal style plantation house. It sits on a low brick foundation and has a gable roof. White Church, Cainhoy
White Church, also known as The Brick Church, and formally as St. Thomas Episcopal Church and St. Thomas and St. Dennis Parish Church, is a historic church north of Cainhoy in Berkeley County, South Carolina. It was built in 1819 as the parish church for St. Thomas and St. Dennis Parish and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, together with its vestry building and cemetery. Reconstruction era In October 1876 the church was the site of a planned Republican meeting, attended mostly by freedmen, which was interrupted by a large party of more than 150 white men, Democrats from Charleston who arrived by steamboat and demanded equal time. As this followed the massacre by whites of seven freedmen at Hamburg in Aiken County from July 4 to July 8, tensions were high.
