Hubertus Varlet
Hubertus Varlet (5 December 1810 – 4 October 1853) was a Netherlands, Dutch architect and colonial administrator, who served on the Dutch Gold Coast. In his capacity as master of works and stores, he rebuilt Ussher Fort, Fort Crèvecoeur in Accra in 1839. Following the promotion of Anthony van der Eb to governor of the Dutch Gold Coast, Varlet succeeded him as the second vice governor for the Fort Batenstein, Ahanta protectorate, which the Dutch had proclaimed following the conclusion of the Dutch–Ahanta War. Jan Verveer
Jan Verveer (27 August 1775 – 22 August 1838) was a major general of the Royal Netherlands Army. Biography Jan Verveer was born in Rotterdam to Johannes Verveer and Anna Maria van Alphen. Verveer joined the army in 1797. In 1803, he was sent to the Dutch West Indies where he remained until 1815. From 1807, Verveer served as Commander of Sint Maarten, until the island was taken by British forces in 1810. He then returned to the Netherlands where he served in the military administration. In 1826, Verveer was an observer to the Congress of Panama. As a consequence of this mission, he became the principal adviser of King William I of the Netherlands on the Nicaragua Canal. In the autumn of 1836, Verveer was appointed a Royal Commissioner by King William I of the Netherlands and charged with concluding a treaty with the King of Ashanti Kwaku Dua I Panyin to facilitate the recruitment of soldiers to the Royal Netherlands Indies Army. Assinie-Mafia is a coastal resort town in south-eastern Ivory Coast. It is a sub-prefecture of Adiaké Department in Sud-Comoé Region, Comoé District. Geography Assinie-Mafia is located 80 kilometres east of Abidjan along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. Warmond
Warmond () is a village and former municipality in the Western Netherlands, north of Leiden in the province of South Holland. The municipality covered an area of 14.42 km² (5.57 mile², 30.7%) of which 4.42 km² (1.71 mile²) is water; had a population of 4,977 in 2004. Together with Sassenheim and Voorhout, it became part of the Teylingen municipality on 1 January 2006. Carel Hendrik Bartels
Carel Hendrik Bartels (29 September 1792 – 10 February 1850) was the wealthiest and most important Euro-African trader and businessman on the Dutch Gold Coast in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Apart from his entrepreneurial activities, Bartels was also a judge and member of the colonial government in Elmina, making him one of the most important men in town. Bartels has an entry in Hutchison's '' The Pen-Pictures of Modern Africans and African Celebrities''. The American historian Larry W. Yarak found an engraving based on a photograph of Bartels in 1995. Gold Coast Euro-Africans were a historical demographic based in coastal urban settlements in colonial Ghana, that arose from unions between European men and African women from the late 15th century – the decade between 1471 and 1482, until the mid-20th century, circa 1957, when Ghana attained its independence. In this period, different geographic areas of the Gold Coast were politically controlled at various times by the Portuguese, Germans, Swedes, Danes, Dutch and the British. There are also records of merchants of other European nationalities such as the Spaniards, French, Italians and Irish, operating along the coast, in addition to American sailors and traders from New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Shirley's Gold Coast Expedition
In 1781, Great Britain declared war on the Dutch Republic, opening the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. As part of its offensive strategy, the British organized an expedition against Dutch colonial outposts on the Gold Coast of Africa (present-day Ghana). Captain Thomas Shirley led the expedition, commanding and several transports carrying two small regiments of independently raised troops under the command of Captain Kenneth Mackenzie of the 78th Foot. Proceedings Battle of Elmina The expedition sailed late in 1781, and arrived off the coast of Africa in January 1782. Dutch Gold Coast
The Dutch Gold Coast or Dutch Guinea, officially Dutch possessions on the Coast of Guinea (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Bezittingen ter Kuste van Guinea'') was a portion of contemporary Ghana that was gradually colonized by the Dutch, beginning in 1612. The Dutch began trading in the area around 1598, joining the Portuguese which had a trading post there since the late 1400s. Eventually, the Dutch Gold Coast became the most important Dutch colony in West Africa after Fort Elmina was captured from the Portuguese in 1637, but fell into disarray after the abolition of the slave trade in the early 19th century.
