Hubert Ernest Newnham
Hubert Ernest Newnham CMG BA (Oxon) (1886–1970) was a Ceylonese civil servant and politician. Hubert Ernest Newnham was born on 1 October 1886 in Southampton, the son of Henry Sullivan Newnham. He was educated at the Junior School of Monkton Combe School, at Dean Close School, Gloucestershire and St John's College, Oxford. Newnham joined the Ceylon Civil Service in November 1909. He also served in the Ceylon Light Infantry obtaining the rank of Captain in 1918. He was the Principal Collector of Customs and Chairman of the Colombo Port Commission. He also was the President of the Colonial Civil Servants’ Association. Newnham served as the Chairman of the Colombo Municipal Council from August 1924 to July 1931. In the 1937 Coronation Honours he was awarded with the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. Mayor Of Colombo
The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party. The 2nd State Council of Ceylon was a meeting of the State Council of Ceylon, with the membership determined by the results of the 1936 state council election held between 22 February and 7 March 1936. The parliament met for the first time on 17 March 1936 and was dissolved on 4 July 1947. Colombo Municipal Council
The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. It consists of a directly elected executive Mayor of Colombo, current elect is Rosy Senanayake, and 119 elected 119 municipal councilors. The council was formed in 1865, it first met in 1866 and derives most of its powers from ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. It is the oldest and the largest local government authority in Sri Lanka which covers a resident population of over 600,000 (as of 2001). Sri Lanka Light Infantry
The Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) is the oldest regiment in the Sri Lanka Army and the oldest infantry regiment in the army. It is made up of ten regular battalions and five volunteer battalions, and is headquartered at the Panagoda Cantonment, Panagoda. Over the years it has become the most distinguished and dependable regiment in the army. History The regiment's origins can be traced back to the formation of the Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers (CLIV) force which was formed on 1 April 1881 by a proclamation issued by the Governor of Ceylon as a reserve unit in Ceylon.
