Dame Celia Mary Hoyles, ( French; born 18 May 1946) is a British mathematician, educationalist and Professor of Mathematics Education at University College London (UCL), in the Institute of Education (IoE). Early life and education Celia Mary French was born on 18 May 1946. She was educated at the University of Manchester where she graduated with a first class degree in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics in 1967. She subsequently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1971, and a Master of Education degree (MEd) in 1973. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1980, with a thesis titled "Factors in school learning - the pupils' view: a study with particular reference to mathematics". All her degrees are from the University of London. Career and research Hoyles began her career as a secondary school teacher, later becoming an academic. Hugh Hoyles
Sir Hugh Hoyles (October 17, 1814 – February 1, 1888) was a politician and lawyer who served as the third premier of the colony of Newfoundland. Hoyles was the first premier of Newfoundland to have been born in the colony, and served from 1861 to 1865. Born in St. John's, he was the son of Newman Hoyles, the first leader of the Tory Party. Educated in Nova Scotia Hoyles trained as a lawyer and returned to St John's in 1842, quickly establishing a large and lucrative legal practice. He was eminent in the Natives' Society and the Newfoundland Church Society. Hoyles was elected to the Assembly in 1848. He rapidly became the Conservative leader, opposing responsible government, on the grounds that the colony was not ready for it, and throwing his weight behind Bishop Feild's campaign to divide the Protestant educational grant and put Anglicans on the same footing as Catholics. Newman Wright Hoyles
Newman Wright Hoyles (1777–1840) was an English businessman and politician. Hoyles was born in Dartmouth, England, and he became involved in the Newfoundland fish trade after being a fishing captain for many years. In 1811, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law and dealt with business along the Southern Shore and Conception Bay. Hoyles retired from business in 1831 and entered politics in 1832, running for House of Assembly. He was a strong supporter of the local legislature, but difference between him and the reform movement caused Hoyles to become leader of the Conservative faction expressing the interest of the mercantile sector which was disillusioned with the growing power of the Roman Catholic bishop, Michael Anthony Fleming. Hoyles was appointed Colonial Treasurer in 1833 and kept that position until he died in 1840, even though he never ran for re-election in 1836. Hoyles son, Hugh W.
