Howick Local Board
Howick Local Board is one of the 21 local boards of the Auckland Council, and is overseen by the council's Howick Ward councillors. The board's administrative area includes the suburbs Pakuranga, Howick, Flat Bush, and East Tāmaki, and covers much of east and south-east Auckland. The board is governed by nine board members, with three elected from each of the boards three sub-divisions. The inaugural members were elected in the nationwide 2010 local elections, coinciding with the introduction of the Auckland Council. Auckland Council ( mi, Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau) is the local government council for the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority that has the responsibilities, duties and powers of a regional council and so is a unitary authority, according to the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, which established the council. The governing body consists of a mayor and 20 councillors, elected from 13 wards. There are also 149 members of 21 local boards who make decisions on matters local to their communities. Flat Bush
Flat Bush (also known as Ormiston or Flatbush) is a southeastern suburb in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. It has recently become one of the city's largest new planned towns after being developed as a rural area of Auckland for several decades. Located near Manukau Heights, plans for substantial expansion began under the Manukau City Council - having bought 290 hectares in the area in 1996. As of 2022, substantial residential development means the area has grown to over 34,000 people, a similar population to Nelson, and includes a newly-opened shopping mall - Ormiston Town Centre. Howick Youth Council
The Howick Youth Council (HYC) is a youth voice organisation covering the region of the Howick Local Board in Auckland, New Zealand. The council runs events in east Auckland, advocates on behalf of youth and facilitates Auckland Council consultation. Operating in the suburbs of Howick, Pakuranga, Botany Downs and Ormiston, the group represents the youth in the population of 140,000 people living in the boundaries of the Howick Local Board. The 2016 New Zealand local elections were triennial local elections to select local government officials and District Health Board members. Sharon Stewart (politician)
Sharon Stewart is a New Zealand politician who is an Auckland Councillor for the Howick ward. She is also the chair of Auckland Council's Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee. Stewart assumed the role in 2013. Political career She was awarded the Queen's Service Medal (QSM) in 1998 for services to Howick. Stewart served on the Manukau City Council for twelve years, between 1998 and 2010. The councillor was instrumental in helping aid New Zealand rescue efforts in the 1999 Jiji earthquake. On the Manukau council, she was an advocate against 3G cell tower construction, in her local area, on the basis of decreased property values and "health risk . The 2019 Auckland local elections took place between September and October 2019 by postal vote as part of nation-wide local elections. The elections were the fourth since the merger of seven councils into the Auckland Council, which is composed of the mayor and 20 councillors, and 149 members of 21 local boards. Bruce Kendall
Anthony Bruce Kendall (born 27 June 1964) is a two-time Olympic medallist in sailing for New Zealand. He has served as an elected member of the Howick Local Board since 2019. Yachting Kendall's family are yachtsmen. He began sailing in the P-class and Starlings before progressing to crewing 470 and keelboats. When he was 14 he turned to windsurfing. Olympics Competing in boardsailing, Kendall's first medal was a bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, he improved to win the gold medal. Kendall also competed at the following Olympics in Barcelona, just failing to win another medal due to faulty equipment. Communities and Residents (C&R) is a right-leaning local body ticket in Auckland, New Zealand. It was formed in 1938 as Citizens & Ratepayers, with a view to controlling the Auckland City Council and preventing left-leaning Labour Party control. East Tāmaki
East Tāmaki is a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It is a largely industrial area adjacent to a rapidly growing population. Prior to the 1960s it was largely a dairy farming area. A landmark is Smales Mountain which in 2010 has the remains of an old Pa, a stone field garden, an early church, and farm homestead.
