Howard J. Whitmore Jr.
Howard J. Whitmore Jr. (May 9, 1905 – June 19, 1998) was an American politician who was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1947–1953 and List of mayors of Newton, Massachusetts, Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts from 1954–1959. Early years A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Whitmore played baseball for Newton High School. He went on to Harvard College, was a "star right-hander" pitching for the Harvard Crimson baseball, Crimson baseball team, and graduated in 1929. After his freshman year at Harvard in 1926, he played summer baseball for Chatham Anglers, Chatham in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Political career Whitmore's political career began in 1940 when he was elected to the Newton Board of Aldermen. Ted Kennedy
Edward Moore Kennedy (February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States senator from Massachusetts for almost 47 years, from 1962 until his death in 2009. A member of the Democratic Party and the prominent political Kennedy family, he was the second most senior member of the Senate when he died. He is ranked fifth in United States history for length of continuous service as a senator. Kennedy was the younger brother of President John F. Josiah Spaulding
Josiah Augustus "Si" Spaulding (December 21, 1922 – March 27, 1983) was an American businessman, attorney, and politician. Education and military service Spaulding graduated from the Hotchkiss School and Yale University in 1947, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. He served three years as a pilot for the US Marine Corps during World War II and was discharged as a first lieutenant. He attended Columbia Law School. Politics Spaulding served as the chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party from 1967 to 1969. He was the Republican nominee for United States Senator in 1970 and Massachusetts Attorney General in 1974. Spaulding was elected to Common Cause's National Governing Board in 1973. 1964 United States Senate Election In Massachusetts
The 1964 United States Senate election in Massachusetts was held on November 3, 1964, with the incumbent Democratic senator, Ted Kennedy, easily defeating his Republican challenger Howard J. Whitmore Jr. The election coincided with the 1964 United States presidential election, which was won by incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson in a landslide, as well as the Senate election in neighboring New York which was won by Kennedy's older brother Robert. It took place less than a year after the assassination of the incumbent Senator's eldest surviving brother, President John F. Kennedy. The two surviving Kennedy brothers thus benefited from both an overall national swing to the Democrats and public sympathy following their sibling's murder. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years.
