Howard J. Hunter Jr.
Howard J. Hunter Jr. (December 19, 1946 – January 7, 2007) was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's fifth House district, including constituents in Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Perquimans (and formerly Northampton) counties. A funeral director from Ahoskie, North Carolina, Hunter served nine full terms in the state House of Representatives. The North Carolina House of Representatives is one of the two houses of the North Carolina General Assembly. The House is a 120-member body led by a Speaker of the House, who holds powers similar to those of the President pro-tem in the North Carolina Senate. The qualifications to be a member of the House are found in the state Constitution: "Each Representative, at the time of his election, shall be a qualified voter of the State, and shall have resided in the district for which he is chosen for one year immediately preceding his election." Northampton County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,471. Its county seat is Jackson. Northampton County is part of the Roanoke Rapids, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Rocky Mount- Wilson-Roanoke Rapids, NC Combined Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1741 from Bertie County. It was named for James Compton, 5th Earl of Northampton. In 1759 parts of Northampton County, Bertie County, and Chowan County were combined to form Hertford County. In 1959, the county went to the U.S. Supreme Court to defend the use of a literacy test as a requirement to vote. In ''Lassiter v.
