Hovis
Hovis Ltd is a British company that produces flour and bread. The brand originated in Stoke-on-Trent and was first mass-produced in Macclesfield, Cheshire, in 1886. It became part of Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) in 1962 after a succession of mergers. RHM, with its brands including Hovis and Mother's Pride, was acquired by Premier Foods in 2007. Hovis became a limited company in April 2014, after Premier Foods sold a 51% stake in the business to The Gores Group to form a joint venture between the two companies. In November 2020, it was announced that both the Gores Group and Premier Foods had sold their stakes in the business to British-based private equity firm Endless LLP. Hovis specialises in high wheatgerm wholemeal flour, the bread being baked independently. It also produces the Nimble brand reduced-calorie bread. Boy On The Bike
''The Bike Ride'', ''Bike Round'' or ''Boy on the Bike'' is a 1973 advert for the bread maker Hovis. It was directed by Ridley Scott. Production ''Boy on the Bike'' was one of five adverts that Ridley Scott directed for Hovis in the early 70's. The advert shows a boy (played by Carl Barlow) pushing his bicycle laden with loaves of bread up a picturesque English cobbled street. A voice over, presumably of the boy at a later age, nostalgically describes the trip while a recording of Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" is played by the Ashington Colliery Band. Despite the common belief that it was set in the North of England, the advert was filmed on Gold Hill, Shaftesbury in Dorset and the voice-over is also narrated in a West Country accent. RHM plc, formerly Rank Hovis McDougall, was a United Kingdom food business. The company owned numerous brands, particularly for flour, where its core business started, and for consumer food products. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index but was acquired by Premier Foods in March 2007. History Early years The company was founded by Joseph Rank in 1875 as flour milling business when he rented a small windmill. He initially lost money and therefore took a co-tenancy at West's Holderness Corn Mill. In 1885 he built a mechanically-driven flour mill in Hull in order to beat competition from abroad. Premier Foods plc is a British food manufacturer headquartered in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Macclesfield
Macclesfield is a market town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. It is located on the River Bollin in the east of the county, on the edge of the Cheshire Plain, with Macclesfield Forest to its east; it is south of Manchester and east of Chester. Ridley Scott
Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is a British film director and producer. Directing, among others, science fiction films, his work is known for its atmospheric and highly concentrated visual style. Mother's Pride
Mother's Pride is a brand name for a variety of breads produced by British Bakeries, a division of Premier Foods. The company also bakes Nimble (reduced calorie) and Hovis branded loaves as well as supermarket 'own brand' ranges. British Bakeries was set up by Rank, Hovis, McDougall in 1955 to counter the then dominance of Allied Bakeries ( Sunblest) and ensure an outlet for their flour products. The London and South Western Railway (LSWR, sometimes written L&SWR) was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or a supercapacitor.
