Houston Mayor
The following is a list of people who have served as mayor of the city of Houston in the U.S. state of Texas. Until 2015, the term of the mayor was two years. Beginning with the tenure of Bob Lanier, the city charter imposed term limits on officeholders of no more than three terms (six years total). On November 3, 2015, voters approved Proposition 2, which extended the terms of the Mayor, City Controller and City Councilmembers to four years, while imposing a limit of two terms. Sylvester Turner
Sylvester Turner (born September 27, 1954) is an American attorney and politician who is serving as the 62nd mayor of Houston, Texas. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, Turner was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1989 until 2016. He attended the University of Houston and Harvard Law School. Turner ran for mayor of Houston in 1991 Houston mayoral election, 1991, losing in the runoff election to Bob Lanier (politician), Bob Lanier. He lost again in 2003 Houston mayoral election, 2003, coming in third and thus missing the runoff. Turner won the 2015 Houston mayoral election, 2015 election, defeating Bill King in the runoff by 4,082 votes out of 212,696 votes cast in the closest mayoral election in Houston history by percentage. Otis Massey
Otis Massey (May 26, 1891 – September 1968) was mayor of Houston, Texas from January 1943 to 1946. He was married to Mayme Kiser, they had two daughters, Dorothy and Marion. Massey was the first mayor of Houston to serve under the city manager form, rather than the city commission form of government. As mayor, he supported a proposal to sell 133 acres of land to the M.D. Anderson Foundation in December 1943. This land would be developed into hospitals in the Houston Medical District. John Thomas Browne
John Thomas Browne (March 23, 1845 – August 19, 1941) was an American merchant and politician. He served on the Houston City Council, two terms as Mayor of Houston, and three terms in the Texas House of Representatives. Early life John Thomas Browne was born March 23, 1845, in Ballylanders, County Limerick, Ireland to Michael and Winifred (Hennessy) Browne. His family emigrated into the United States in October 1851. Not long after arriving in New Orleans, his father died. Benjamin Campbell (July 27, 1858 – March 19, 1952) was an attorney and a mayor of Houston, Texas. Early life Benjamin Campbell (1858 – 1952) was born on July 27, 1858 to Farquhar and Gabriella Singleton Campbell in Marengo County, Alabama. He moved with his family to Walker County, Texas around 1859. Career Campbell did not attend law school, but served as a legal apprentice in the law offices of Abercrombie & Randolph, a firm based in Huntsville, Texas. The Texas bar accepted him in 1882. He worked for local government, first as the Walker County Attorney and then as prosecutor for the Twelfth Judicial District of Texas. In 1890, he partnered with Thomas Ball to form a new law firm. Joseph Jay Pastoriza
Joseph Jay "J. J." Pastoriza (January 8, 1857 – July 9, 1917) was a printer, real estate investor, and politician in Houston, Texas. He served both as Houston's Tax Commissioner and Mayor. Pastoriza was the first Hispanic mayor of the city of Houston. Pastoriza was orphaned and adopted as a young child in Houston. He started working in the printing business at about age twenty before establishing his own stationery and print shop. Pastoriza took an interest in public policy and politics after he retired from the printing business. He joined the Houston Single Tax League, and later traveled to study tax policy. Between 1911 and 1917 he served as Houston Tax Commissioner, establishing the Houston Single Tax Plan in 1912. Houston voters elected him Mayor of Houston in 1917.
