Houston Housing Authority
Houston Housing Authority (HHA), formerly Housing Authority of the City of Houston (HACH), is the public housing authority in Houston, Texas. The Mayor of Houston appoints the board of directors of the HHA, but it itself is not a department of the city government. Most of its funding originates from the Federal Government of the United States. In 2002 Mike Snyder of the ''Houston Chronicle'' wrote that the HHA had "considerable autonomy" and often operated at a "distance" from the city authorities, making it "far more independent" from municipal authority than the actual City of Houston Department of Housing and Community Development. Public Housing In The United States
In the United States, subsidized housing is administered by federal, state and local agencies to provide subsidized rental assistance for low-income households. Public housing is priced much below the market rate, allowing people to live in more convenient locations rather than move away from the city in search of lower rents. In most federally-funded rental assistance programs, the tenants' monthly rent is set at 30% of their household income. Now increasingly provided in a variety of settings and formats, originally public housing in the U.S. consisted primarily of one or more concentrated blocks of low-rise and/or high-rise apartment buildings. Kelly Village (Houston)
Kelly Village also known as "Kelly Court," is a 500-unit public housing projects located in the historic Fifth Ward, Houston, Fifth Ward neighborhood of Houston. It is a part of the Houston Housing Authority. It is Houston's second housing project built for African Americans, opening after World War II. In the 1950s 80% of Kelly Court where low income black families, many descended from rural areas in Louisiana and Mississippi. By the 1970s many buildings where severely run-down and overran by drug dealers, pimps and criminals. Violent crimes such as robberies and assaults in Kelly court hit an all-time high in the early 1980s forcing police to set a curfew. Lenwood E. Johnson (died May 2018) was an activist who fought for public housing and African-American rights in Houston, Texas. Jefferson F. Davis (June 3, 1808December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the president of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. He represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party before the American Civil War. He had previously served as the United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857 under President Franklin Pierce. Davis, the youngest of ten children, was born in Fairview, Kentucky.
