Hourglass (newspaper)
''The Hourglass'' was a free monthly British newspaper, published by Extinction Rebellion (XR). It was launched in September 2019, with the strap-line "Rigorous Journalism for Fragile Times". 110,000 copies were printed of its first edition, and 143,000 of the second. The April and May 2020 issues were produced only in electronic format, following the COVID-19 lockdown, after which the paper ceased publication. It was edited by environmental activist Zion Lights and included interviews with Margaret Atwood, Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman, Ray Mears, Michael Eavis, Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac, Maxine Peake, and Kevin Anderson. XR spokesperson Rupert Read was a regular columnist for the paper. Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion (abbreviated as XR) is a global environmental movement, with the stated aim of using nonviolent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse. Extinction Rebellion was established in the United Kingdom in May 2018 by Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell, and Roger Hallam, along with eight other co-founders from the campaign group Rising Up! Its first major action was to occupy the London Greenpeace offices on 17 October 2018, which was followed by the public launch at the "Declaration of Rebellion" on 31 October 2018 outside the UK Parliament. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom is a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In the United Kingdom, it has resulted in confirmed cases, and is associated with deaths. The virus began circulating in the country in early 2020, arriving primarily from travel elsewhere in Europe. Various sectors responded, with more widespread public health measures incrementally introduced from March 2020. The first wave was at the time one of the world's largest outbreaks. By mid-April the peak had been passed and restrictions were gradually eased. A second wave, with a new variant that originated in the UK becoming dominant, began in the autumn and peaked in mid-January 2021, and was deadlier than the first. Zion Lights
Zion Lights (born June 1984) is a British author and activist known for her environmental work and science communication. She was a spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion (XR) UK on TV and radio between 2018 and 2020, and founded and edited XR's '' Hourglass'' newspaper. She wrote a column for ''The Huffington Post,'' authored the evidence-based nonfiction book ''The Ultimate Guide to Green Parenting,'' and contributed to ''Zero Waste Kids'' with humanitarian Rob Greenfield Rob Greenfield. Michael Eavis
Athelstan Joseph Michael Eavis (born 17 October 1935) is an English dairy farmer and the co-creator of the Glastonbury Festival, which takes place at his farm in Pilton, Somerset. Personal life Eavis was born in Pilton, Somerset and grew up at Worthy Farm in the village. His father was a Methodist local preacher, and his mother a school teacher. Karen Christiana Figueres Olsen (born 7 August 1956) is a Costa Rican diplomat who has led national, international and multilateral policy negotiations.
