Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill, Calgary
Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill is an inner suburban neighbourhood in northwest Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Located north of the Hillhurst and West Hillhurst communities, the boundaries of the district are 16th Avenue N (Trans-Canada Highway)to the north; 14th Street W to the east; Lane north of 7th Avenue N to 19th Street W and 8th Avenue N to the south; and Crowchild Trail, 12th Avenue N, Juniper Road, and 22nd Street W to the west. Lions Park C-Train station and North Hill Centre are located within the community. In the early 90s, a gas station located in the North Hill Centre parking lot was found to have been leaking fuel, contaminating the soil and groundwater in Hounsfield Heights with benzene and 1,2-Dichloroethane. The community is built on an escarpment and is popular for its views of downtown to the south and the Rocky Mountains to the west. Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield (28 August 1919 – 12 August 2004) was an English electrical engineer who shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Allan MacLeod Cormack for his part in developing the diagnostic technique of X-ray computed tomography (CT). His name is immortalised in the Hounsfield scale, a quantitative measure of radiodensity used in evaluating CT scans. The scale is defined in Hounsfield units (symbol HU), running from air at −1000 HU, through water at 0 HU, and up to dense cortical bone at +1000 HU and more. Early life Hounsfield was born in Sutton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England on 28 August 1919. He was the youngest of five children (two brothers, two sisters). Harold William Hounsfield Riley
Harold William Hounsfield Riley Sr. (December 15, 1877 – January 1, 1946) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He was born in St. Lambert, Quebec and his family moved to Calgary in 1888. On October 31, 1911 after the death of Archibald McArthur, Mr. Riley ran for the Conservative Party, in what would be known as the brothers by-election. His brother Ezra Riley represented the same district from 1906 to 1910. In the election he faced John Peter McArthur, brother to the late Archibald McArthur. He served Gleichen until the 1913 Election. During the 1913 he ran in Bow Valley, he was defeated by George Lane from the Liberal party. He was married to Maude Riley (née Keen) in 1907, who is best known for convincing the Calgary Police Force to hire women in 1913. Thomas Hounsfield
Thomas Douglas Hounsfield (29 April 1910 — 8 February 1994) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1938 and 1939. Hounsfield was born at Hackenthorpe Farm, Derbyshire to James Hounsfield and Edith Wilson. In his youth he played for the local Hackenthorpe Cricket Club. He started playing for Derbyshire in 1937 in the second XI. He made his first-class debut in the 1938 season in July in a match against Leicestershire, when he made 14 in his second innings. He played one more match for the county in 1938 but played mainly in the second XI. In the 1939 season he put in sixteen first team appearances and made his top score of 56 against the touring West Indies.
