Houghton is a small town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills, in the City of Tea Tree Gully and the Adelaide Hills Council local government areas between Tea Tree Gully, South Australia, Tea Tree Gully and Inglewood, South Australia, Inglewood on the North East Road. History Houghton was named after the town of Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham, Durham, England. The 162-hectare Highercombe estate was settled by George Alexander Anstey, George Anstey in 1841, who named it after his original family home near Dulverton, Somerset. The present-day Highercombe golf course south of the townsite was part of this estate. In 1857, the house, now with sixteen rooms, and estate was purchased by George Waterhouse (politician), George Waterhouse, who became Premier of South Australia in 1861. Houghton County is a county in the Upper Peninsula in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 37,361. The county seat and largest city is Houghton. Both the county and the city were named for Michigan State geologist and Detroit Mayor Douglass Houghton. New Houghton is a former mining village in the Bolsover District of Derbyshire, England, from both Bolsover and Mansfield. Governance It lies within the civil parish of Pleasley. It is administered as part of the District of Bolsover. The area of Pleasley Parish Council includes Pleasley, New Houghton, Pleasley Vale and Stony Houghton. Houghton on the Hill is a deserted medieval village in the Breckland district of Norfolk, England, notable for its Grade I listed church. The only surviving buildings are a farm and St Mary's church. The church was rescued in the 1990s after being left in a ruinous state. During the restoration some wall paintings dating from about the time of the ''Domesday Book'' were discovered; these are the earliest-known large-system wall paintings in the country. The restoration was driven by the efforts of one man, Bob Davey MBE. The church is supported by a charitable trust 'The Friends of St Mary's', who open the church on a regular basis and provide guided tours. History There is evidence of habitation in this area going back to prehistoric times, with flint tools and a Bronze Age spearhead being found in local fields. Houghton Conquest is a village and civil parish located in the Central Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England. The parish also includes the hamlet of How End. History Historically in the hundred of Redbornestoke, the name of the village originated from the Conquest family who held a manor and lands in the area from the 13th century to the 18th century. The Houghton in Houghton Conquest is pronounced 'how-ton', and this has been the official pronunciation since at least 1998. The Church of All Saints was constructed in the village during the 14th century, and is today the largest parish church in Bedfordshire. Features of interest include the wall paintings, sculpture, stained glass, benches and stalls. In 2018 all of the lead, weighing 21 tonnes, was stolen from the church roof.
