Houdaille Quarry
The Houdaille Quarry is a former rock quarry located in Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey bordering the northern edge of the Baltusrol Golf Club. Bisected by Interstate 78, it is directly east of the Watchung Reservation and touches the Summit border as well as Hidden Valley Park. Owned by Union County, New Jersey and typically closed to the public aside from occasional ecological tours, it is called the “Grand Canyon of Union County." Ecology The quarry is at a stage referred to as "early ecological succession" which, in ecological terms, is the beginning of transformation to an old-growth forest. Because of its isolation since operations ceased, the quarry contains fewer invasive species than neighboring Watchung Reservation. Rahway Valley Railroad
The Rahway Valley Railroad (RVRR) was a short-line railroad in the Northeastern United States which connected the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Roselle Park and the Central Railroad of New Jersey in Cranford, New Jersey, Cranford with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in Summit, New Jersey, Summit. Operating over a span of 95 years (1897–1992) in Union County, New Jersey, Union County, New Jersey, in its prime it was one of the most successful shortline railroads in U.S. history, turning a profit during the Great Depression. Greenockite
Greenockite is a rare cadmium bearing metal sulfide mineral consisting of cadmium sulfide (CdS) in crystalline form. Greenockite crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It occurs as massive encrustations and as hemimorphic six-sided pyramidal crystals which vary in color from a honey yellow through shades of red to brown. The Mohs hardness is 3 to 3.5 and the specific gravity is 4.8 to 4.9. Greenockite belongs to the wurtzite group and is isostructural with it at high temperatures. It is also isostructural with sphalerite at low temperatures. It occurs with other sulfide minerals such as sphalerite and galena, and is the only ''ore mineral'' of cadmium.
