John Hotaling
John Ritter Hotaling (March 3, 1824 – October 12,St. Louis Globe-Democrat; October 12, 1886; Obituary Maj. John R. HOTALING. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?id=41468 1886) was an American soldier, engineer, and businessman. He served as a dragoon in the Mexican–American War and as a cavalry officer and senior staff member of General John Logan's during the American Civil War. After the war, Hotaling was elected postmaster of Rochelle, Illinois; a position he occupied for 15 years, after which he retired and moved his family to Huron. He died there in 1886 of a heart attack. Early life and career Hotaling was born in Sharon, New York, the eldest of ten children. Anson Parsons Hotaling
Anson Parsons Hotaling or Houghtaling (Feb 28, 1827, New York – Feb 16, 1900, San Francisco ) was a San Francisco merchant and real estate developer. Hotaling was the third son and sixth child of Garrit A Ho(u)ghtaling (1789 -1876) and Hanna Parsons (1789-1880), his surname ultimately deriving from the Dutch surname ''Hoogteijling''. Born and raised in rural New York, he sailed for San Francisco in 1852 on "The Racehound". The route at that time was around Cape Horn, and his ship put into several South American cities for provisioning. He was tempted to stay in South America, but continued on to San Francisco. Once in California, he briefly tried his hand at mining but within a year returned to San Francisco and opened a wine and spirit business, owned in partnership. Pete Hotaling
Peter James Hotaling (December 16, 1856 – July 2, 1928), nicknamed "Monkey", was an American center fielder in Major League Baseball from to . He has been described as one of the earliest journeymen in professional baseball. When he played catcher in the minor leagues in 1877, he was one of the first men to wear a catcher's mask. Early life Hotaling was born in Mohawk, New York. He suffered an eye injury while catching a minor league baseball game. When he came back weeks later with a catcher's mask on, his teammates gave him the nickname "Monkey". Career Hotaling was promoted to the major leagues in 1879, playing 81 games for the Cincinnati Reds, mostly in the outfield. He changed teams every year through 1882, playing for the Cleveland Blues, Worcester Ruby Legs and Boston Red Caps in that span, before returning to the Blues for 1883 and 1884. Arthur Hotaling
Arthur Douglas Hotaling (February 3, 1873 – July 13, 1938) was an American film director, producer and writer. He directed 113 films between 1910 and 1928, including the 1914 film ''Outwitting Dad'', which featured the onscreen debut of Oliver Hardy. Hotaling was born in New York City. In August 1902 he married Maye Shearor who became the silent film actress Mae Hotely, her stage name was a play on his name. She appeared in some of his films and he also acted in some of them. He worked for Lubin for 11 years including time at the company's Jacksonville film studio. He died in California from a heart attack. Frank Hotaling (April 4, 1909 – April 13, 1977) was an American art director, born in New York City, whose career encompassed over 100 films, mostly B movies. His association with famed director John Ford led to an Oscar nomination, shared with John McCarthy Jr. and Charles S. Thompson, for Best Art Direction-Set Direction, Color, for 1952's ''The Quiet Man''. This brought an upsurge in his film work and allowed Hotaling the opportunity to work on such A-list projects as Ford's ''The Searchers'' (1956), Delmer Daves' '' 3:10 to Yuma'' (1957), and William Wyler's ''The Big Country'' (1958). Hotaling died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California.
