¡Viva! Vaughan
''¡Viva! Vaughan'' is a 1965 studio album by Sarah Vaughan, orchestrated and conducted by Frank Foster (jazz musician), Frank Foster, and produced by Quincy Jones. Reception The Allmusic review by Ken Dryden awarded ''¡Viva! Vaughan'' three and a half stars and said "Vaughan is in great voice throughout the date and the material is generally first-rate, except for the bland "Night Song"...Unfortunately, the bossa nova selections ("The Boy From Ipanema" and "Quiet Nights") are burdened with pedestrian string arrangements that date the music as much as the generally uninspired Latin percussion. It's likely that this lack of focus confused the record-buying public as to what type of music this was and caused it to be overlooked." Track listing Personnel * Sarah Vaughan â€“ singing, vocals * Jerome Richardson â€“ flute * Wayne Andre â€“ trombone * Dick Hixson â€“ bass trombone * Bernard Eichen â€“ violin * Barry Galbraith â€“ guitar * Bob James (mus ...

Latin Music
Latin music (Portuguese language, Portuguese and es, mĂşsica latina) is a term used by the music industry as a catch-all category for various styles of music from Ibero-America (including Music of Spain, Spain and Portuguese music, Portugal) and Latin American music in the United States, the Latino United States inspired by Music of Latin America, Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese music genres, as well as music that is sung in either Spanish language, Spanish and/or Portuguese language, Portuguese. Terminology and categorization Because the majority of Latino immigrants living in New York City in the 1950s were of Puerto Rican or Cuban descent, "Latin music" had been stereotyped as music simply originating from the Spanish Caribbean. The popularization of bossa nova and Herb Alpert's Mexican-influenced sounds in the 1960s did little to change the perceived image of Latin music. Since then, the music industry classifies all music sung in Spanish or Portuguese as Latin ...

Sarah Slightly Classical
''Sarah Slightly Classical'' is a 1963 studio album by Sarah Vaughan, arranged by Marty Manning. Reception The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow says that "It has often been said that Sarah Vaughan had the voice to be an opera singer. This Roulette LP finds her coming as close as she ever did to performing in a classical vein. Listeners who enjoy hearing her scat and swing are advised to look elsewhere but others who like when Sassy goes a bit over the top and really stretches her voice will find this unusual effort quite enthralling." Roulette Records
Roulette Records was an American record company and label founded in 1957 by George Goldner, Joe Kolsky, Morris Levy and Phil Kahl, with creative control given to producers and songwriters Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore. Levy was appointed director. The label had known ties to New York City mobsters. Levy ran the label with an iron fist. In 1958 Roost Records was purchased. Goldner subsequently bowed out of his partnership interest in Roulette and, to cover his gambling debts, sold his record labels Tico, Rama, Gee and—years later—End and Gone to Levy, who grouped them into Roulette. Peretti and Creatore later left Roulette and worked as freelance producers for RCA Records throughout the 1960s. They co-founded Avco Records in 1969. In 1971 Roulette took over the catalog of Jubilee Records. History During the late 1950s, Roulette scored hits by Buddy Knox, Jimmy Bowen, The Playmates, Jimmie Rodgers, Ronnie Hawkins and The Delicates as well as releasing albums by Pearl Bailey, ...

Reception The Allmusic review by John Bush awarded the album four-and-a-half stars and said that ''At Mister Kelly's'' captures Vaughan at her "best and most relaxed", stating that "her unerring sense of rhythm carries her through every song on this set, whether the occasion calls for playfulness and wit ("Thou Swell," "Honeysuckle Rose") or a world-wise melancholia ("Willow Weep for Me")". Bush also praises Jimmy Jones and Roy Haynes Track listing # "September in the Rain" ( Al Dubin, Harry Warren) – 3:30 # "Willow Weep for Me" (Ann Ronell) – 5:16 # " Just One of Those Things" ( Cole Porter) – 3:18 # " Be Anything (But Be Mine)" (Irving Gordon) – 4:50 # "Thou Swell" ( Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers) – 2:44 # " Stairway to the Stars" (Matty Malneck, Mitchell Parish, Frank Signorelli) – 5:06 # " Honeysuckle Rose" ( Andy Razaf, Fats ...

In the United States, it is operated through Republic Records; in the United Kingdom and Japan (as Mercury Tokyo in the latter country), it is distributed by EMI Records. Since the separation of Island Records, Motown, Mercury Records, and Def Jam Recordings combining the Island Def Jam Music Group, Mercury Records has been placed under Island Records, although its back catalogue is still owned by the Island Def Jam Music Group (now Island Records). Background Mercury Records was started in Chicago in 1945 and over several decades, saw great success. The success of Mercury has been attributed to the use of alternative marketing techniques to promote records. The conventional method of record promotion used by major labels such as RCA Victor, Decca Records, and ...
