Hospitality House
Hospitality House (aka Central City Hospitality House) is a house of hospitality-type center that serves the homeless and poor of San Francisco, specifically those of the Tenderloin district of the city, where it is located. At a drop-in day center it provides counseling, instruction, computer access, medical triage, and other forms of assistance. It also runs a 30-bed shelter, two Employment Resource Centers, and a fine arts studio. Its main office is located at 290 Turk Street. It has been in operation since 1967. Hospitality House is known for encouraging the homeless and poor to take part in art and creative writing. It has published the work of many artists and writers, and holds periodic exhibitions where the artists can sell their work. House Of Hospitality
A house of hospitality or hospitality house, in the United States, is an organization to provide shelter, and often food and clothing, to those who need it. Originally part of the Catholic Worker Movement, houses of hospitality have been run by other organizations, including organizations that are not Catholic or Christian. Founded on principals of Christian anarchism, the houses provide hospitality without charge and without requiring religious practice or attendance at services. A variety known as a hospital hospitality house is for families displaced due to medical issues of a family member, and is often located near a medical center. Tenderloin, San Francisco
The Tenderloin is a neighborhood in downtown San Francisco, in the flatlands on the southern slope of Nob Hill, situated between the Union Square shopping district to the northeast and the Civic Center office district to the southwest. It encompasses about 50 square blocks, and is a large wedge/triangle in shape (point faces East). It is historically bounded on the north by Geary Street, on the east by Mason Street, on the south by Market Street and on the west by Van Ness Avenue. The northern boundary with Lower Nob Hill has historically been set at Geary Street. The area has among the highest levels of homelessness and crime in the city. The terms "Tenderloin Heights" and " The Tendernob" refer to the area around the indefinite boundary between the Upper Tenderloin and Lower Nob Hill. Drop-in Center
A drop-in center is a service agency for either the mentally ill, homeless people, teenagers, and other communities that offers a place where people can go to obtain food and other services. A mental health drop-in center can provide a friendly environment for people who are struggling with mental health symptoms to recover. Also in another case, a drop-in center as opposed to a homeless shelter usually does not provide a temporary residence; rather, it aims to provide other services to endangered or disadvantaged groups in the community, including the homeless, people with addictions, or teenagers. Drop-in centers are usually open during the daytime. Some regular drop-in centers double as warming centers or cooling centers in the winter or summer, and may provide overnight shelter during these months. San Francisco Marathon
The San Francisco Marathon is an annual USATF-certified road running event held in San Francisco, California, that includes a full marathon, two half marathons, an ultramarathon, a 10k, and a 5K. With the exceptions of 1988 and 2020, the marathon has been held annually since 1977. The marathon starts and finishes on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. History The first San Francisco Marathon was organized by the Pamakids Runners Club. Athol Barton, a taxicab driver who at the time lived in Reno, Nevada won the inaugural on July 10, 1977 in a time of 2:24:59. Outsider Art
Outsider art is art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art worlds. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. The term ''outsider art'' was coined in 1972 as the title of a book by art critic Roger Cardinal. It is an English equivalent for ''art brut'' (, "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created in the 1940s by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Jane Winkelman
Jane Winkelman (1949 – May 30, 2012) was an American painter. Her paintings are often signed "Jane 'in vain' Winkelman." She is considered an outsider artist. Life Jane Winkelman was born in 1949 in Long Island, New York. She lived for a time in Miami as well as San Francisco. While in San Francisco, she lived on the edge of homelessness in the Tenderloin district. Work Winkelman was introduced to painting at San Francisco's Hospitality House, a free community arts center. Her work is characterized by vivid colors, fantastic figures, and strong political commentary. They often include text as well as images. Her style has been compared to that of Hieronymous Bosch, Marc Chagall, and Edvard Munch.
