Horwood is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Horwood, Lovacott and Newton Tracey, in the North Devon district, in the county of Devon, England, situated about 4 miles east of the town of Bideford. In 1961 the civil parish had a population of 79. On 1 April 1986 the parish was abolished and merged with Newton Tracey. Horwood, Lovacott and Newton Tracey is a civil parish in North Devon district, Devon, England. In the 2011 census it was recorded as having a population of 487. It includes the villages of Horwood and Newton Tracey and the hamlet of Lovacott. The parish was formed as Newton Tracey in 1986 from the former civil parishes of Horwood and Newton Tracey and the Lovacott ward of Fremington parish, and adopted its current name in 1991. The neighbouring parishes are Fremington to the north; Tawstock to the east; Yarnscombe (in Torridge district) to the south east; Alverdiscott (Torridge district) to the south; Westleigh and Instow to the west. There are 40 listed buildings in the parish. The Church of St Michael in Horwood is Grade I listed; the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Newton Tracey and Hoopers Cottage in Horwood (a house dated c.1600) are Grade II*, and the remaining houses, gravestones, and farm buildings are Grade II. Horwood is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was formerly known as Dog Bay. It is located northeast of Lewisporte just off of Route 331. It was once the home of a bustling lumber company owned by the Horwood family. Dog Bay was renamed Horwood after the family name. Geography Horwood is in Newfoundland within Subdivision L of Division No. 8. Demographics As a designated place in the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Horwood recorded a population of 260 living in 106 of its 124 total private dwellings, a change of from its 2011 population of 235. Great Horwood
Great Horwood is a small village and is also a civil parish within the unitary authority area of Buckinghamshire, England with a population of about 1025 people (2001 Census). It is about five miles ESE of Buckingham, six miles WSW of Milton Keynes. History and locale The village name 'Horwood' is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'muddy wood'. The affix 'Great' was added later to differentiate it from the adjacent village Little Horwood. In the ''Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'' in 792 the village was recorded as ''Horwudu''. The village was from ancient times on the periphery of the Whaddon Chase: royal hunting land that stretched across the north part of the Aylesbury Vale. In 1447 the village was granted Royal charter to hold a weekly market, thus becoming a market town. The rents from the market were collected by New College, Oxford.
