Yosef Yozel Horwitz
Yosef Yozel Horowitz ( he, יוסף יוזל הורוביץ), also Yosef Yoizel Hurwitz, known as the Alter of Novardok (1847–December 9, 1919), was a student of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter, the founder of the Musar movement. Horowitz was also a student of Rabbis Yitzchak Blazer and Simcha Zissel Ziv and spent some time in Brest, learning from Rabbi Chaim Soloveichik. He established the Novardok yeshiva in the city of Navahrudak. Additionally, he established a network of yeshivas in Dvinsk, Minsk, Warsaw, Berdichev, Lida and Zetl. Some of his discourses were recorded in the book ''Madregas Ha-Adam'' (Hebrew: מדרגת האדם, ''Stature of Man''). The most basic and important theme in his book is '' Bitachon'' (trust in God). Steven G. Horwitz (February 7, 1964 – June 27, 2021) was an American economist of the Austrian School. Horwitz was the Distinguished Professor of Free Enterprise in the department of economics in the Miller College of Business at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Susan Band Horwitz is an American biochemist and professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she holds the Falkenstein chair in Cancer Research as well as co-chair of the department of Molecular Pharmacology. Horwitz is a pioneer in dissecting the mechanisms of action of chemotherapeutic drugs including camptothecin, epipodophyllotoxins, and bleomycin, and Paclitaxel, taxol. Horwitz's work on taxol in particular has brought her international recognition. Horwitz discovered that taxol binds to microtubules, resulting in arrest of the cell cycle in metaphase. Her work paved the way to using taxol and other microtubule binding agents as chemotherapeutics. Taxol remains widely used today, as a means to treat ovarian, breast, and lung cancer. However, since taxol is in short supply, Horwitz is directing studies in her lab to identify similar therapies in natural products. David Jason Horwitz (born 30 September 1994), commonly referred to as Dave, is an Australian rugby union player who plays as a Centre for Sydney rugby club Randwick. He formerly played for Irish rugby club Connacht and domestically New South Wales Country Eagles who did compete in the National Rugby Championship (NRC). Bernhard Horwitz (1807 in Neustrelitz – 1885 in London) was a German and British chess master, chess writer and chess composer. Horwitz was born in Neustrelitz and went to school in Berlin, where he studied art. From 1837 to 1843, he was part of a group of German chess players known as "Berlin Pleiades, The Pleiades". He moved to London in 1845, where he became a British citizen. In 1846, he lost a match against visiting master Lionel Kieseritzky, and another against Howard Staunton, losing 15.5–8.5. His best chess result was winning a match against Henry Bird (chess player), Henry Bird in 1851. Kai Horwitz (born 9 April 1998) is a Chilean Olympic alpine skier. Early and personal life Horwitz was born in Santiago, Chile, and is Jewish. His sister Nadja Horwitz represented Chile in sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the women's 470 class. His cousins Henrik von Appen and Sven von Appen represented Chile in alpine skiing at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Henrik competed for Chile at the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics in all five alpine skiing events. Phineas Jonathan Horwitz (March 3, 1822 – September 18, 1904) was an American surgeon. Biography Born in Baltimore, Phineas was the son of immigrant Dr. Jonathan (Jonas) Horwitz and his wife, Deborah Andrews, the granddaughter of the Revolutionary War financier Haym Salomon. Phineas was educated at private schools in Baltimore then studied medicine at the University of Maryland. Following his graduation in 1845, he continued his medical studies at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Career After passing the exams of the U.S. Navy's Medical Department, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon on November 18, 1847.
