Horseed FC vs Heegan FC was the first ever association football match to be aired live in Somalia. Significance The significance of this event is attributed to the fact that this sports event is an indication for the increasing visibility of stability in Somalia. After the country had undergone two decades and a half of civil war it made any semblance of entertainment unthinkable due to the fact that venues that hosted such events would usually be targeted. The Somali Football Federation president Abdiqani Said Arab considered the ability to broadcast live on local television as "a breakthrough" and evidence that the country is recovering after a lengthy period of violence. It was expected to attract a large number of fans from all over the country. Horseed FC
Horseed FC is a Somali football club based in Mogadishu, Somalia. It was founded in 1971 by Lt. Col Mohamed Ahmed Alim, who started the Somali Armed Forces Sports Directorate recruiting from the ranks of the Army. It is seven times champion of the Somalia League. A team of Somali Armed Forces, Horseed SC was among the most formidable and recognized football clubs in the country. After the civil war broke out, it discontinued operations, but has been revived in 2013 by Gen Dahir Aden Elmi Commander of the Somalia Armed Forces. Gen Elmi revived all the different teams of Horseed Sports Club with emphasis on the Football Team which again began to compete in the Somalia Serie A league. In 2017, Col Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, was appointed as its chairman, and since then the club has seen positive changes and developments which have catapulted the club to regain its former glory. Heegan FC (formerly Somali Police FC until 2013) is a Somali football club based in Horseed, a district of Merca. History The club was founded in the Port of Merca in 1950 by descendants of Italian colonists in Merca during the ONU mandate. They have won the Somalia League in its inaugural year in 1967, and again in 2014/15. The team is based in the rebuilt Banadir Stadium. Yariisow Stadium, formerly known as Garoonka Banaadir Stadium, or simply Benadir Stadium in the Somali language, is a multi-use 20,000-capacity stadium in Mogadishu, Banaadir, Somalia, that is currently used mostly for football matches.
