Hornet (roller Coaster)
Hornet is a family twister roller coaster located at Wonderland Park in Amarillo, Texas. It was previously enclosed and located at Six Flags AstroWorld, as well as at Boblo Island Amusement Park. History The ride originally debuted at Boblo Island Amusement Park as Nightmare. When that park closed, it was relocated to Six Flags AstroWorld and renamed Mayan Mindbender. The Mayan Mindbender was an indoor ride themed to a pyramid structure. After AstroWorld closed at the end of the 2005 season, the ride moved again to Wonderland Park in Amarillo, Texas Amarillo ( ; Spanish for "yellow") is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Potter County. Wonderland Park is an amusement park located in Thompson Memorial Park, Amarillo, Texas, United States. Park history The park was founded in 1951 by Paul and Alathea Roads. Twister Roller Coaster
A twister roller coaster is the generic name given to any roller coaster layout which tends to twist or interweave its track within itself several times. It is essentially the opposite of an Out and Back roller coaster, which is often a much more simplistic layout. Twister roller coasters often have the illusion of having small or tight clearances due to the track usually travelling through several support structures. This is known as a head chopper effect. Twister roller coasters were unheard of before the 1920s. John Miller is credited with inventing upstop wheels and secure lap bar restraints, both which led roller coaster designers to create wilder and twistier layouts. Lift Hill
A lift hill, or chain hill, is an upward-sloping section of track on a roller coaster on which the roller coaster train is mechanically lifted to an elevated point or peak in the track. Upon reaching the peak, the train is then propelled from the peak by gravity and is usually allowed to coast throughout the rest of the roller coaster ride's circuit on its own momentum, including most or all of the remaining uphill sections. The initial upward-sloping section of a roller coaster track is usually a lift hill, as the train typically begins a ride with little speed, though some coasters have raised stations that permit an initial drop without a lift hill. Six Flags AstroWorld, also known simply as AstroWorld, was a seasonally operated amusement park in Houston, Texas. Owned and operated by Six Flags, the park was situated between Kirby Drive and Fannin Street, directly south of I-610. Boblo Island Amusement Park
Boblo Island Amusement Park is an abandoned amusement park which operated from 1898 until its closure on September 30, 1993. Its amusement rides were sold in 1994. The park was located on Bois Blanc Island, Ontario, just above the mouth of the Detroit River. The people of Detroit, Michigan, characterized it as the city's Coney Island.
