''Inherit the Wind'' is an American play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, which debuted in 1955. The story fictionalizes the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial as a means to discuss the then-contemporary McCarthy trials. Background ''Inherit the Wind'' is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, which resulted in John T. Scopes' conviction for teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution to a high school science class, contrary to a Tennessee state law. The role of Matthew Harrison Brady is intended to reflect the personality and beliefs of William Jennings Bryan, while that of Henry Drummond is intended to be similar to that of Clarence Darrow. Bryan and Darrow, formerly close friends, opposed one another at the Scopes trial. The character of E. K. Hornbeck is modeled on that of H. L. John Westbrook Hornbeck (January 24, 1804 – January 16, 1848) was a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Westbrook Hornbeck was born in Montague Township, New Jersey. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1827. He studied law, was admitted to the bar of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, in 1829 and commenced practice in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1830. William Hornbeck
William Hornbeck (August 23, 1901 – October 11, 1983) was an American film editor and film industry executive. In a 1977 poll of film editors, he had been called "the best film editor the industry has produced." Posted online at filmreference.com . He was nominated four times for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, and won the award for '' A Place in the Sun'' (1951). Other important credits include ''It's a Wonderful Life'' (1946), ''Giant'' (1956), and ''I Want to Live!'' (1958). He edited films from notable directors including Zoltan Korda, Frank Capra, and George Stevens. Universal Pictures almost brought him on board to completely re-edit George Lucas' ''American Graffiti''. Hornbeck started his editing career in his teens with the Keystone Studios, which were located close to his family's home in Los Angeles, California. Hornbeck is a town in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 480 at the 2010 census, up from 435 in 2000. It is part of the Fort Polk South Micropolitan Statistical Area. History As early as the 1830s people settled in the area now known as Hornbeck, but a town didn’t begin to form until 1897, when an agent for the Arkansas Town Site Company named F.A. Hornbeck purchased land along the Kansas City Southern Railroad (KCS) for $8,640. Structures necessary for servicing locomotives were constructed as well as a brick kiln to supply bricks for construction.All information contained in the History Section may be found at thTown of Hornbeck's official website.
