Herkimer County, New York
Herkimer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. It is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from battle wounds in 1777 after taking part in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War. Herkimer County is part of the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1791, Herkimer County was created as one of three counties split off from Montgomery (the other two being Otsego and Tioga counties) as New York State was developed after the American Revolutionary War. Its area was much larger than the present county, however, and was reduced subsequently as more counties were organized. Ohio is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 1,002 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the state of Ohio. The town is in the northern part of the county and northeast of Utica. Part of Ohio is within the Adirondack Park. History The town of Ohio was established as the town of West Brunswick in 1823 from part of the town of Norway. The name was changed to Ohio in 1836. Indian River (Moose River Tributary)
The Indian River is a river located in Hamilton County and Herkimer County in New York. The Indian River begins at the mouth of Brook Trout Lake in the West Canada Lakes region of the southwest Adirondack Mountains. The river flows into the South Branch Moose River. Course Traveling downstream from Brook Trout Lake, the Indian River picks up the Cobblestone Creek coming in on its left, just before it forms the Green Stillwater, a 1/2 mile long flatwater section at the base of Indian Mountain. Then the river forms a series of rapids for a half mile or so before it slows and forms what is locally called the Big Eddy, a deep pool where the river makes a hard left. After this, the outlet of Mountain Lake joins the Indian River from the left, only 50' below what once was the first crossing of the river, a log bridge that loggers constructed back in the 1960s, in order to bring their logs out to market from the deep woods. The pumpkinseed (''Lepomis gibbosus''), also referred to as pond perch, common sunfish, punkie, sunfish, sunny, and kivver, is a small/medium-sized North American freshwater fish of the genus ''Lepomis'' (true sunfishes), from family Centrarchidae (sunfishes, crappies and black basses) in the order Perciformes. Distribution and habitat The pumpkinseed's natural range in North America is from New Brunswick down the east coast to South Carolina. It then runs inland to the middle of North America, and extends through Iowa and back through Pennsylvania. Pumpkinseed sunfish have however been introduced throughout most of North America.
