Hoquiam High School, located within the Hoquiam School District in Hoquiam, Washington, is a comprehensive high school which first opened in 1891. Hoquiam serves as the third largest high school in Grays Harbor County, Washington; covering the city of Hoquiam and unincorporated parts of northern Grays Harbor County. The school is accredited by the Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Location The campus adjoins John Gable Community Park, and is adjacent to both Bowerman Basin in Grays Harbor and the Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge. It is roughly 16 miles from the Pacific coast, 25 miles from the Quinault Indian Reservation, and 45 miles from the Olympic National Park. Hoquiam
Hoquiam ( ) is a city in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. It borders the city of Aberdeen at Myrtle Street, with Hoquiam to the west. The two cities share a common economic history in lumbering and exporting, but Hoquiam has maintained its independent identity. It shares a long rivalry with its more populated neighbor, especially in high school sports. Hoquiam (Ho'-kwee-um, or Ho-kwim, to natives) was incorporated on May 21, 1890. Its name comes from a Native-American word meaning "hungry for wood", from the great amount of driftwood at the mouth of the Hoquiam River. The population was 8,776 at the 2020 census. Eldon Bargewell
Major General Eldon Arthur Bargewell (August 13, 1947 – April 29, 2019) was a United States Army General officer. He served as commander of the U.S. Army's Delta Force unit. Early life and education Bargewell was born in Hoquiam, Washington and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1965, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1967. Career He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1968. During the Vietnam War Bargewell was accepted into MACV-SOG where he served at the "Command And Control North (CCN)" Forward Operating Base 4 at Da Nang and served as Non-Commissioned Officer Team Leader for Reconnaissance Team "Viper" (all CCN teams were named for states or snakes). While serving with CCN, Bargewell earned the Distinguished Service Cross in September 1971 for his actions in combat in saving his team and getting them to safety. Edward C. Gayda (May 11, 1927 – December 11, 2021) was an American professional basketball player. Gayda was selected in the second round (15th pick overall) of the 1950 NBA draft by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks after a collegiate career at Washington State. Olympic Stadium (Hoquiam)
Olympic Stadium is a stadium in Hoquiam, Washington which opened in 1938. The City of Hoquiam first got the idea for an all-wood stadium in the early 1930s when it applied for a Civil Works Administration grant. In 1932, the grant was approved. Construction began in early 1938, with the stadium officially opening to the public on November 24, 1938. A renovation grant was awarded through the " Save America's Treasures" program requested by Congressional Representative Norm Dicks in 2005. Dicks also backed the State Historic Preservation Office request to add the stadium to the National Register of Historic Places which was granted in 2006. The physical structure of Olympic Stadium is an old-growth fir heavy-timber frame with cedar shingles siding. Built in a truncated U-shape with angled corners, the open portion of the -story grandstand faces east.
