Hopkins's Groove-toothed Swamp Rat
Hopkins's groove-toothed swamp rat (''Pelomys hopkinsi'') is a species of rodent in the family Muridae. It is found in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, possibly Burundi, and possibly Tanzania. Its natural habitat is swamps. It is threatened by habitat loss. The rat was described by Robert William Hayman in 1955. It is named after the entomologist, George Henry Evans Hopkins, O.B.E., M.A., F.R.E.S. (1898-1973), who lived and worked in Uganda for many years, and was noted for his researches on three groups of insects: lice, fleas and mosquitoes. Reginald Ernest Moreau
Reginald Ernest Moreau, (29 May 1897 – 30 May 1970), was an English civil servant who worked as an accountant in Africa and later contributed to ornithology. He made studies of clutch size in nesting birds, compared the life-histories of birds in different latitudes and was a pioneer in the introduction of quantitative approaches to the study of birds. He was also a long time editor of the ornithological journal ''Ibis''. Early life Moreau was born on 29 May 1897 near Norbiton Gate at Kingston upon Thames. His father worked in the stock exchange while his mother's family ran a baker's business in Kingston. The family name was derived from an ancestral French immigrant who had moved to Bayswater as a bookseller. George Henry Evans Hopkins OBE (22 March 1898 – 20 February 1973) was an English entomologist. Hopkins made major contributions in scientific research into three groups of insects – lice, fleas and mosquitoes. He was regarded as a great scientist, with multidisciplinary training and experiences.
