Hopewell School (Cedar Creek, Texas)
Hopewell School, also known as the Hopewell-Rosenwald School, is a former African American school in Cedar Creek, Texas, that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 2015. The school was built in 1921–1922 with assistance from the Rosenwald Fund. The school opened in 1922 and closed in the late 1950s. The school was initially funded by a monetary and a land grant from Martin and Sophia MacDonald of Bastrop County and the Rosenwald Fund. It was built by local residents to educate young African American children during the early to mid 1900s, a time of racial segregation in the United States. Restoration After the school closed, the building fell into disrepair. In 2015, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative awarded a $50,000 capital grant to the Hopewell-Rosenwald Community School Project to help convert the building into a community center. Texas State Highway 21
State Highway 21 (SH 21) runs from the Texas-Louisiana boundary east of San Augustine to San Marcos in east and central Texas. SH 21 mostly follows the alignment of the Old San Antonio Road and the El Camino Real, except for the portion between Midway and Bryan, where the Old San Antonio Road took a more northerly route, and SH 21 follows a more direct route. That section of the Old San Antonio Road is served by Texas State Highway OSR. History SH 21 was one of the original 25 routes proposed in Texas on June 21, 1917 along a route from the Louisiana border east of St. Augustine to Gonzales, overlaid on top of the Gonzales-St. Augustine Highway. Cedar Creek is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, United States, located 11 miles (18 km) west of Bastrop at the intersection of State Highway 21 and Farm to Market Road 535., retrieved 2008-12-20 Cedar Creek has a post office with a ZIP code 78612. The community takes its name from Cedar Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. The 405-acre Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort is located in Cedar Creek. The Rosenwald Fund (also known as the Rosenwald Foundation, the Julius Rosenwald Fund, and the Julius Rosenwald Foundation) was established in 1917 by Julius Rosenwald and his family for "the well-being of mankind."
