Hopen (Svalbard)
Hopen is an island in the southeastern part of the Svalbard archipelago (Norway). Hopen was discovered in 1596 by Jan Cornelisz Rijp during the third expedition by Willem Barentsz, trying to find the Northeast Passage. Later, in 1613, its name was given by Thomas Marmaduke of Hull, who named it after his former command, the ''Hopewell''. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute operates a staffed weather station on the island with a staff of four persons. For the welfare of the crew, there are three cabins available on the island for their use. During World War II, the Luftwaffe placed a meteorological team there under cover of Operation Zitronella. On August 28, 1978 an early model Tupolev Tu-16 of the Soviet Air Force crashed on the island. All seven crew were killed in the accident. Hopen, Møre Og Romsdal
Hopen is the administrative center of Smøla Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village lies east of the villages of Dyrnes and Råket on the northern coast of the island of Smøla. The main road through Hopen is Norwegian County Road 669 which also heads north connecting many small islands and ending at the island village of Veiholmen. Hopen Church is located in the village. Vågan ( sme, Vuogát) is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Lofoten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Svolvær. Hopen Church
Hopen Church ( no, Hopen kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Smøla Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hopen, along the northern coast of the island of Smøla. It is the church for the Hopen parish which is part of the Ytre Nordmøre prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1892 by the architect Adolf Schirmer. The church seats about 260 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1589, but the church was not new that year. The first church in Hopen was established during the middle ages at Veiholmen on a small island about northwest of the present church site. The church was a stave church with no tower or spire. It was likely built during the 14th century. The rocky island was not a good site for a cemetery alongside the church, so residents had to travel to Brattvær Church for funerals and burials. ...
