Rice Hooe
Rice Hooe was the name of three Virginia colonists, two of whom served in the colonial House of Burgesses, and became ancestors of a family of planters important in northern Virginia and southern Maryland. Their descendants Alexander Hooe, Bernard Hooe Jr., James Hooe, two named John Hooe as well as John Hooe Jr., and William Hooe would all serve in the Virginia General Assembly before the American Civil War. Hooe, East Sussex
Hooe is both a small village and a civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex; the village being located about two miles (3 km) north-west of Bexhill, and north of the A259 coast road, on the B2095 road from Ninfield. The parish name takes account of local usage, and the location of the parish church; in fact the main population centre is to the north, and is called Hooe Common. History The name Hooe comes from the Saxon word meaning a ridge, since the village stood on a ridge of land between two arms of the sea. Those areas are now low-lying land, one being the ''Hooe Levels'', across which flows the stream known as ''Waller's Haven''. The River Ashbourne flows into the Haven, down which iron products, particularly cannon, used to be shipped from the Wealden iron works at Ashburnham. Hooe is a suburb of Plymstock, Plymouth in the English county of Devon. History Hooe was built over the site of the estate of Radford, the family seat of the Harris family. Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales from 1870 to 1872 describes Hooe as follows: Geography Hooe is situated adjacent to the estuary of the River Plym. It consists of two areas, Higher Hooe and Lower Hooe. Lower Hooe includes the area near Hooe Lake and the old barn from the former Hooe Barton Farm which was demolished in 1969. Areas around Hooe include Radford to the east, Turnchapel to the north-west, and Jennycliff Bay to the west. Hooe has woodland and farmland to the south. Present day Hooe has a park, small garage, a newsagent, a small grocery store, an Indian takeaway, a Chinese takeaway, a pasty shop and a post office.
