Hong Kong Gold Cup
The Hong Kong Gold Cup is a Group One Hong Kong Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1979 at Sha Tin Racecourse. It is open to horses three years of age and older. Run on grass, turf, it was initially run over a distance of 1,800 metres, but is now set at 2,000 metres (ten furlongs) and it offers a purse of HK$12,000,000. The second leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing#Hong Kong, Hong Kong Triple Crown the Group One race comes after the Hong Kong Stewards' Cup, Steward's Cup and is followed by the Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup. A HK$5,000,000 bonus is paid to the owner of the horse winning all three legs of the Triple Crown Series and a consolation bonus of HK$2,000,000 will be paid to the owner of the horse winning any two legs. Sha Tin Racecourse
Sha Tin Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing in Hong Kong. It is located in Sha Tin District, Sha Tin in the New Territories. It is managed by Hong Kong Jockey Club. Penfold Park is encircled by the track, and the Hong Kong Sports Institute is located immediately south of the property. Michael Jackson planned to perform at the racecourse on his Dangerous World Tour, which was the start of the third leg, but was cancelled due to the conflict of the racing season. History It was built in 1978 (under the administration of Sir David Akers-Jones, the then-Secretary for the New Territories) on reclaimed land and is the larger of the two tracks in Hong Kong. Brian Kan Ping-chee
Brian Kan Ping-chee (; 24 November 1937 – 12 February 2022) was a five-time champion horse trainer and politician in Hong Kong. Horse training career An émigré to the United Kingdom in 1952 who worked in a Chinese restaurant near Epsom Downs Racecourse, Kan found a job as a groom in a horse stable through jockey Teith Tugan and obtained a diploma in horse management. Kan returned to Hong Kong in 1969 and joined the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (as it was then known) as an assistant trainer. He was granted a trainer's licence in the 1978–79 season and had since trained a Hong Kong record of over 830 winners and the winners of 100 cup races until his retirement in 2005. Douglas Whyte
Douglas Whyte (born 15 Nov 1971 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a former horse racing jockey and is now a horse trainer. He became Hong Kong champion jockey in the 2000-2001 season and won 13 consecutive titles, a record in flat racing. In 2013-14, he relinquished that title to Zac Purton, finishing third with 88 wins to give him an accumulated total of more than 1,600 races in Hong Kong with career stake earnings of more than $HK 1.3 billion. Douglas Whyte retired as a jockey on 10 February 2019 Shatin meeting. He started as a horse trainer for the 2019/2020 season and finished with 42 Wins. Ivan Allan
Ivan Allan (16 January 1941 – 4 November 2009) was a champion race horse trainer and businessman. On 24 May 1983, Allan was shot by gunmen outside his house and was rushed to Toa Payoh Hospital. Three bullets were removed while one remained in his chest. Allan became the subject of controversy after being romantically involved for over ten years with actress Glory Annen Clibbery. After a domestic violence incident in July 2000 Clibbery ended the relationship. Allan hired an attorney when Clibbery refused to vacate the Piccadilly home they both lived in for over a decade. Indigenous (horse)
Indigenous () (1993–2004) was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse who also raced in Hong Kong. He was bred by Major John de Burgh at his Oldtown Stud in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland and sold as a yearling for 10,500 guineas at the Goffs Orby Sale in 1994. Purchased by trainer Kevin Prendergast, he was named "Qualtron." Racing in Ireland at age two, he won one of three starts and at age three, won two of five starts. With a record of 3-0-1 in 8 starts, he was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Pang Yuen Hing to race in Hong Kong where he was renamed Indigenous and became widely regarded as one of Hong Kong's best stayers. Felix Coetzee
Felix Coetzee (born 7 March 1959 in Durban, Natal Province, Union of South Africa) is a South African three-time champion jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Felix Coetzee is the son of a KwaZulu-Natal trainer and his grandfather was an owner-trainer. As a fifteen-year-old, Felix Coetzee attended the Jockey Academy at Summerveld then served his apprenticeship with his father's racing stable. At age sixteen, he scored his first significant win, riding Kentford to victory in the 1975 Clairwood Winter Handicap. In 1982 he signed on with renowned Cape Town trainer Terence M. Millard with whom he was associated until his retirement in 1991. John Moore (born 17 March 1950) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. Moore was born in Sydney, Australia, The son of jockey and trainer George Moore. He began working in Hong Kong racing as an assistant to his father in 1971. In 1985, John Moore took out his trainers license and built a highly successful career for himself in Hong Kong.
