The literary history of Honduras is intersects with aspects of political and socioeconomic atmosphere that has long been prevalent in Honduran history. In the ''Handbook of Latin American Literature,'' Salgado claims that the birth of Honduran literature begins with Fray Jose Trinidad Reyes, who founded the first University of Honduras. The proliferation that was seen in other Central American countries did not appear in Honduras. Furthermore, because the country was under political unrest during much of its history a great deal of the literature remains unpublished and thus, unknown. In fact, Romanticism reaches Honduras at a later date than most other literature in the world, appearing in late nineteenth century and is seen in the work of Ramon Rosa. 	General Strike Of 1954 The general strike of 1954 was a watershed political and economic event in the history of Honduras that ushered in widespread change. When former United Fruit Company lawyer Juan Manuel Gálvez became president in 1954, following the contested election of 1953, he surprised everyone by adopting a pro-labor stance, introducing, among other things, an 8-hour work day, including extra pay for work on holidays. This has been widely interpreted as an attempt by Gálvez to build a larger electoral base. In April 1954, banana workers employed by United Fruit began a wildcat strike in the northern town of Tela, primarily over pay issues. In May, dockworkers in Puerto Cortés demanded double pay for holiday work, in accordance with the law. They went out on strike when their leader was dismissed by United Fruit, and subsequently all the United Fruit workers, some 25,000, and also workers for the rival banana exporter Standard Fruit, another 15,000, also joined the strike. 	Argentina Díaz Lozano Argentina Díaz Lozano (December 5, 1909 – August 13, 1999) was the pseudonym for the Honduran writer Argentina Bueso Mejía. She was a journalist and novelist, who wrote in the romantic style with feminist themes. She won numerous awards for her books, including the Golden Quetzel from Guatemala, the Honduran National Literature Prize Ramón Rosa" and the "Order Cruzeiro do Sud" from Brazil. She was admitted to the Academia Hondureña de la Lengua and is the only Central American woman whose work has officially contended for a Nobel Prize for Literature. 	Clementina Suárez Clementina Suárez (12 May 1902 – 1991) was an early Honduran writer, who broke social norms. She was the first woman to publish a book of poetry in Honduras and is now recognized as the 'Honduran matriarch poet'. Clementina was an influential person of art and culture of Honduras and Central America. Life Suárez was a Bohemian whom loved to frequent cafes. Since she was little she got used to getting whatever she wanted and doing whatever she felt like.
