Homer A. Holt (justice)
Homer Aloncious Holt (born April 27, 1831, Parkersburg, then in Virginia; died January 7, 1898, Lewisburg, West Virginia) was a West Virginia lawyer and justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Holt practiced as a lawyer from 1853 to 1873, except for a period of service as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He was a delegate to the West Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1872. In that year he was also elected to the position of local circuit court judge. After the circuit boundaries were reformed, he was again elected to a circuit judge position. In 1890 he was appointed to the state Supreme Court of Appeals to fill a vacancy, and then was elected to the remaining 4 years of that term in 1892. In 1871 he and Alexander F. Mathews founded the Bank of Lewisburg. It was the first bank in Greenbrier County, opening for business on July 29. Supreme Court Of West Virginia
The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is the state supreme court of the state of West Virginia, the highest of West Virginia's state courts. The court sits primarily at the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston, although from 1873 to 1915, it was also required by state law to hold sessions in Charles Town in the state's Eastern Panhandle. The court also holds special sittings at various locations across the state. Although the West Virginia Constitution allowed for an intermediate court of appeals to be created, since 1974 the Legislature declined to do so, until 2021 and thus the Supreme Court provided the only review of the decisions of the state's trial courts of general jurisdiction, the West Virginia Circuit Courts. ''The Green Bag'' was a popular legal magazine published in Boston between 1889 and 1914—the Progressive Era—containing news of legal events, biographies, and essays, generally in a lighthearted tone. The magazine was initially captioned "A Useless, but Entertaining Magazine For Lawyers"; later "An Entertaining Magazine for Lawyers". The name of the magazine was purported to reflect the use of green bags by barristers, although this assertion was disputed.
