History The name ''Homebush'' is taken from the name of a pastoral run name used by John Walker in 1866. Homebush Post Office opened on 5 December 1883 and closed in 1976. Homebush Sugar Mill opened in 1883 and closed in 1922. Homebush State School opened on 24 January 1889. In 2014, Homebush State School celebrated its 125th anniversary. The opening service for the Homebush Presbyterian Church was held on Sunday 6 October 1912. In the 2011 census, Homebush had a population of 277 people. Geography As its name suggests, the suburb of South Mackay is immediately to the south of the central suburb of Mackay. Adjoining the Coral Sea, South Mackay has flat land just above sea level apart from a small hill (approx 10 metres above sea level) in the south-east of the locality. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 6 January 1997. History The association of the South Sea Island community with this site began in 1892 when the Colonial Sugar Refining Company donated land from their Homebush holding for a community meeting house. The Pioneer Valley lay within the southern section of the Kennedy land district. While pastoral land in the Leichhdart and Port Curtis districts was opened for settlement in the early 1850s, the Kennedy was not opened for selection until November 1859. The first settlers established large runs across the entire Pioneer Valley. By the late 1860s pastoral holdings dominated the district although some land was utilised for agriculture around the township of Mackay.
