Holýšov
Holýšov (; ) is a town in Plzeň-South District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 5,600 inhabitants. Administrative division Holýšov consists of two municipal parts (in brackets population according to the 2021 census): *Holýšov (4,902) *Dolní Kamenice (123) Geography Holýšov is located about southwest of Plzeň. It lies mostly in the Švihov Highlands, only the western part of the municipal territory lies in the Plasy Uplands. The highest point is a nameless hill at above sea level. The town is situated on the right bank of the Radbuza River. History The first written mention of Holýšov is in a deed of Pope Gregory X from 1273. Transformation from a small village to a town began after 1897, when one of the biggest glassworks in Austria-Hungary were founded and the population significantly increased. Liberation Of The Holýšov Concentration Camp
On 5 May 1945, the concentration camp in German-occupied Holýšov was liberated by the Polish Holy Cross Mountains Brigade. Around 700 women were freed, as well as 200 SS members and 15 guards were imprisoned. Background The Holy Cross Mountains Brigade, established 11 August 1944, was one of the largest formations in the National Armed Forces National Armed Forces (; NSZ) was a Polish right-wing underground military organization of the National Democracy (Poland), National Democracy operating from 1942. Holy Cross Mountains Brigade
The Holy Cross Mountains Brigade () was a controversial tactical unit of the Polish National Armed Forces established on 11 August 1944. It did not obey orders to merge with the Home Army in 1944 and was a part of the Military Organization Lizard Union faction, related to the National Radical Camp political party. Its soldiers fought simultaneously with Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and the Polish communist underground, though it sometimes collaborated with the Nazis to further its anti-communist, anti-Jewish and totalitarian goals. List Of Subcamps Of Flossenbürg
The expansion of Flossenbürg concentration camp led to the establishment of subcamps, the first of which was established at Stulln in February 1942 to provide forced labor to a mining company. Many of them were located in the Sudetenland or across the border in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The vast majority were established after 1 March 1944. Initially, the subcamps were not involved in armaments production, which changed in the second half of 1944 due to a large influx of available prisoners and the activities of the ''Jägerstab'', which sought to increase German aircraft production. The Radbuza (; ) is a river in the Czech Republic, the secondary source river of the Berounka River. It flows through the Plzeň Region. It is long, making it the List of rivers of the Czech Republic, 17th longest river in the Czech Republic. Etymology The name is derived from the personal Slavic name Radbud. The land through which the river flows once belonged to someone of that name.
