Holyrood (cross)
The Holyrood or Holy Rood is a Christian relic alleged to be part of the True Cross on which Jesus died. The word derives from the Old English ''rood'', meaning a pole and the cross, via Middle English, or the Scots ''haly ruid'' ("holy cross"). Several relics venerated as part of the True Cross are known by this name, in England, Ireland and Scotland. Black Rood of Scotland Saint Margaret (c. 1045–1093), a Saxon Princess of England, was born in Hungary. Following the conquest of England by the Normans in 1066, she fled to Scotland, where she married Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scotland. She is said to have brought the "Holy Rood", a fragment of Christ's cross, from Hungary or England to Scotland with her. It was known as the Black Rood of Scotland. The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that Saint Margaret brought the cross from Waltham Abbey, after which it was kept in Holyrood Abbey, which her son erected in Edinburgh. Holyrood is a residential neighbourhood in the Bonnie Doon area of south east Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The name, Holyrood, is an anglicisation of the Scots language, Scots ''haly ruid'' (Christian cross, holy cross). According to the 2001 federal census, almost three out of four houses (72.8%) in Holyrood were built between the end of World War II and 1960. Most of the remainder were built during the following decade. The most common type of dwelling in the neighbourhood, according to the 2005 municipal census, is the single-family detached home, single-family dwelling. Single-family dwellings account for seven out of ten, or 72%, of all residences. The Royal Air Force Regiment (RAF Regiment) is part of the Royal Air Force and functions as a specialist corps. Founded by royal warrant in 1942, the Corps carries out soldiering tasks relating to the delivery of air power. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood is a Catholic cemetery located in Westbury, New York. The cemetery, established in 1930, is part of the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre. History The oldest part of the cemetery was originally the burial grounds of Saint Brigid's Cemetery (formerly a part of Saint Brigid's Roman Catholic Church), a cemetery founded in 1856 that was eventually absorbed into the assets-management of Cemetery of the Holy Rood or Catholic Cemeteries. In the 1930s, the then-Diocese of Brooklyn established a cemetery named for the Holy Rood. The grounds of the cemetery are considered part of the greater Hempstead Plains. Holy Rood Cemetery is located at 2126 Wisconsin Avenue (Washington, D.C.), Wisconsin Avenue N.W. at the southern end of Glover Park, adjacent to Georgetown in Washington, D.C. It is at one of the highest elevations in the city and has memorable views. The cemetery contains approximately 7,000 burials, including as many as 1,000 free and enslaved African Americans. It may be the best-documented slave burial ground in the District of Columbia. European immigrants who built the C&O Canal and the City of Washington are also buried at Holy Rood, along with Civil War veterans and others. At the western edge of the cemetery is the grave of Joseph Nevitt, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Huron-Kinloss is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located within Bruce County. The township had a population of 7,069 in the Canada 2016 Census. Huron-Kinloss is located in Western Ontario, on Lake Huron. It is relatively remote, particularly by the standards of densely populated Southern Ontario and remains a primarily rural region of farmland and woodlots. Overview The initial installation included two 150 megawatt (MW) turbine generators which are propelled by steam heated by two large oil burning furnaces. The Number 6 fuel oil used in the plant to keep the furnaces going is delivered by shuttle tankers to the marine terminal constructed as part of the project.
