Holy Family Cathedral, Rumbek
The Holy Family Cathedral or Cathedral of Rumbek, is a religious building belonging to the Roman Catholic Church is located in the town of Rumbek, capital of Lakes State, in the African country of South Sudan, and that serves as the seat of the bishop of Rumbek. A relatively modest cathedral, it is a small building dedicated to the Holy Family, more like a chapel of a mission than a traditional cathedral in the architectural sense. It was restored by Bishop Cesare Mazzolari (1937-2011). It was built in 1955 when the territory was still part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Rumbek ( ar, رمبك) is the capital of Lakes State, central South Sudan, and the former capital of the country. Location Rumbek is approximately by road northwest of Juba, the capital and largest city in the country. Its coordinates are and its elevation is above sea level. Overview Rumbek is the headquarters of ''Rumbek Central County'' and is the capital of Western Lakes State, one of the 28 states of South Sudan. Following the peace agreement ending the Second Sudanese Civil War, the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement chose Rumbek to serve as the temporary administrative center of the Government of Southern Sudan. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rumbek ( la, Rumbekensis) is a diocese in Rumbek in the Ecclesiastical province of Juba in South Sudan. Geography The Diocese of Rumbek is located in the heart of the Republic of South Sudan. Today, it covers the whole territory of Lakes State and the southern part of Warrap State – a territory or around 65.000 km2 (larger than Switzerland). Its population can be estimated to 1.5 million people, although reliable statistics are not available. Lakes (state)
Lakes State is a state in South Sudan. It has an area of 43,595.08 km2. Rumbek is the capital of the state. Lakes is in the Bahr el Ghazal region of South Sudan, in addition to Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal, and Warrap states. Bahr el Ghazal itself was a former province which was split from the Anglo-Egyptian ''mudiriyat'', or province of Equatoria in 1948. The eastern border was the White Nile with Jonglei State on the opposite bank. To the northeast lied the Unity State. Other borders included Warrap State towards the northwest, Western Equatoria to the south and west, and Central Equatoria to the south. In July 2011, Ramciel in Lakes state was under consideration by the federal government as a site for a new national capital, which would replace Juba. Anglo-Egyptian Sudan ( ar, السودان الإنجليزي المصري ') was a condominium of the United Kingdom and Egypt in the Sudans region of northern Africa between 1899 and 1956, corresponding mostly to the territory of present-day Sudan and South Sudan. Legally, sovereignty and administration were shared between both Egypt and the United Kingdom, but in practice the structure of the condominium ensured effective British control over Sudan, with Egypt having limited, local power influence in reality.
