Holy Cross Cemetery (Colma, California)
Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, California is an American Roman Catholic cemetery operated by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Established in 1887 on of a former potato farm, it is the oldest and largest cemetery established in Colma to serve the needs of San Francisco. History Several notable people are buried at Holy Cross, including former politicians, and people of the California Gold Rush. Many of the people interred at the Catholic Calvary Cemetery of San Francisco, were reburied between 1937 and 1945 at Holy Cross in a project to relocate graves outside of the city. There is a memorial sculpture features three crosses and reads: “Interred here are the remains of 39,307 Catholics moved from Mt. Calvary Cemetery in 1940 and 1941 by order of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Thornhill is a suburban district in the Regional Municipality of York in Ontario, Canada, split between the City of Vaughan (its western portion) and the City of Markham (its eastern portion), with Yonge Street forming the municipal boundary. Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery is a cemetery in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. It is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto. History Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery opened in 1954 to handle growth of Catholics in Toronto requiring a Catholic burial in the greater Toronto area. It is named for the universal symbol of Christianity. Besides the crypt at St. Michael's, St. Paul's (cemetery operated from 1822 to 1857) and St. Mary's Church (emergency cholera burials from 1832 to 1834 predated the first church built in 1835) were the only churches with an attached cemetery within Toronto. St. Michael's Cemetery opened in 1855 as a larger and stand alone burial grounds. Holy Cross Cemetery (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Holy Cross Cemetery is a cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. It was constructed in 1843 under the direction of Archbishop William Walsh, on land provided by local authorities. Holy Cross Cemetery replaced the first Catholic cemetery in Halifax, the St. Peter's Cemetery located next to St. Mary's Basilica on Spring Garden Road. Since 1843, some 25,000 persons have been buried at Holy Cross, many of Irish descent, including Canada's fourth Prime Minister, Sir John Sparrow Thompson. Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel is said to have been built in one day on Aug. 31, 1843 by 2,000 volunteers, although the foundation and some prefabrication had been done in advance.
