Holtsville was a station stop on the Greenport Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It was located off the southeast corner of the Waverly Avenue grade crossing on the south side of the tracks between Long Island Avenue and Furrows Road in Holtsville, New York. History The station first opened in a local store as Waverly around 1843. Although the surrounding area was renamed Holtsville in 1860 when a post office opened, the station retained the name "Waverly" until the 1890s, when farmers complained about their shipments going to an upstate town named Waverly by mistake.Bayles, Richard Mather. Holtsville, New York
Holtsville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,714 at the 2010 census. The hamlet is mainly in the Town of Brookhaven, while the southwestern portion is in the Town of Islip. An IRS Processing Center is located in Holtsville, along with NYPA's Richard M. Flynn Power Plant. History The hamlet known today as Holtsville included only a few farmhouses in the late 18th century. In 1843, the Long Island Rail Road opened its Waverly station. Maps from that period label the area as ''Waverly'', and a stagecoach line ran north–south along present day Waverly Avenue. As another post office named Waverly already existed in New York, the name of the hamlet was changed to Holtsville in 1860, in honor of U.S. Postmaster General Joseph Holt. Holbrook (LIRR Station)
Holbrook was a station stop along the Greenport Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The most recent version was located along Coates Avenue and Railroad Avenue in Holbrook, New York. History The original version of Holbrook LIRR station was combined into a cigar factory owned by Colonel Alexander McCotter between June and July 1875. McCotter had already owned of land expanding as far south as the Great South Bay dating back to 1848, which he subdivided in lots. The factory was a 40x40 two stories high building surmounted with a cupola. Half of the ground floor was used as a ticket office, express office, and waiting room, while the rest of the building was used for the factory. The second station opened around 1907 on the north side of the train tracks. Greenport Branch
The Ronkonkoma Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. On LIRR maps and printed schedules, the "Ronkonkoma Branch" includes trains running along the railroad's Main Line from Hicksville (where the Port Jefferson Branch leaves the Main Line) to Ronkonkoma, and between Ronkonkoma and the Main Line's eastern terminus at Greenport. The section of the Main Line east of Ronkonkoma is not electrified and is referred to as the Greenport Branch. Medford (LIRR Station)
Medford is a station in the hamlet of Medford, New York on the Main Line ( Greenport Branch) of the Long Island Rail Road. Medford is located on New York State Route 112 between Peconic Avenue and Long Island Avenue. Access to the station is available from a narrow curving roadway leading off Route 112. This roadway used to connect with the Ohio Avenue intersection until Ohio Avenue was closed north of Peconic Avenue in 2007. Suffolk Traction Company
The Suffolk Traction Company is a former streetcar system in Suffolk County, New York. It operated primarily between Patchogue and Holtsville, but also included a route that served Blue Point, Bayport, and Sayville. It was opened in 1909 and ceased operations in 1919. Main Line The four current roads that originally carried the trolley line between Patchogue and Holtsville are South Ocean Avenue, North Ocean Avenue, and what today is Old North Ocean Avenue. The PD Tower at Patchogue Railroad Station served as a control tower for both the Long Island Railroad and the trolleys.
