Holston River
The Holston River is a river that flows from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Knoxville, Tennessee. Along with its three major forks (North Fork, Middle Fork and South Fork), it comprises a major river system that drains much of northeastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and northwestern North Carolina. The Holston's confluence with the French Broad River at Knoxville marks the beginning of the Tennessee River. The North Fork flows southwest from Sharon Springs in Bland County, Virginia. The Middle Fork flows from near the western border of Wythe County, Virginia, joining the South Fork in Washington County, Virginia, southeast of Abingdon. The South Fork rises near Sugar Grove in Smyth County and flows southwest to join the North Fork at Kingsport. Holston Formation
The Holston Formation, alternately known as the Holston Limestone, is a stratigraphic unit of Ordovician age within the Chickamauga Group in the Ridge-and-Valley physiographic province of the southeastern United States. A long outcrop belt of the Holston in East Tennessee is the source of the decorative building stone known as Tennessee marble. Near Knoxville the Holston Formation is about thick but it thins toward the southwest; near Cleveland, Tennessee it is only 200 feet thick. The rock that is quarried for marble is a highly pure (97% CaCO3) crystalline limestone, pink to cedar-red in color. The Treaty of Holston (or Treaty of the Holston) was a treaty between the United States government and the Cherokee signed on July 2, 1791, and proclaimed on February 7, 1792. It was negotiated and signed by William Blount, governor of the Southwest Territory and superintendent of Native Americans in the United States, Indian affairs for the southern district for the United States, and various representatives of the Cherokee peoples, most notably John Watts (Cherokee chief), John Watts. The treaty established terms of relations between the United States and the Cherokee, and established that the Cherokee tribes were to fall under the protectorate, protection of the United States, with the United States managing all future foreign affairs for all the loosely affiliated Cherokee tribes. A monument to the treaty, erected in 1997, is located on the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, where the treaty was negotiated. Holston Army Ammunition Plant (HSAAP) manufactures Research Department Explosive (RDX) and High Melting Explosive ( HMX) for ammunition production and development. It is government-owned and contractor-operated (GOCO) facility that is part of the US Army Joint Munitions Command. History The Holston Army Ammunition Plant, also known as the Holston Ordnance Works, was constructed by Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee to manufacture explosives during World War II. BAE Systems' division Ordnance Systems, Inc. currently operates the plant under a 25-year facilities use contract. The Holston
The Holston is a condominium high-rise located at 531 Gay Street (Knoxville), South Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. Completed in 1913 as the headquarters for the Holston National Bank, the fourteen-story building was the tallest in Knoxville until the construction in the late 1920s of the Andrew Johnson Building, Andrew Johnson Hotel, located a few blocks away. The Holston was designed by architect John Kevan Peebles, and today represents the city's only Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical Revival-style high-rise. In 1979, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and its prominent position in the Knoxville skyline. David Holston (born January 26, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for JDA Dijon Basket of France's LNB Pro A. He played college basketball at the Chicago State University (CSU). In 2019, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the French LNB Pro A. Early life and college Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Holston attended Avondale High School in Auburn Hills where he led the team to the 2002 Class B state championship. During his career at Avondale he earned all-county and all-state honors, scored over 2,000 career points, and yet was not offered a single college basketball scholarship. Holston enrolled at Chicago State in the fall of 2004 and earned a spot on the men's basketball roster as a walk-on.
